Question on a new green laser I just got..

Hey guys, im Frank, completely new to LPF, been enjoying lasers casually for a little while and just made my first "real" purchase from Lazerer.

So I purchased the "Mini" 150mw 532nm green laser and it uses a 16340 battery. The one that came with it is an ultrafire 880mah 3.7v. I ordered a power certificate and the laser's stable output is supposedly 150mw, it lights matches and burns through electrical tape. However, my question is this: How come when the battery is fully charged, the laser mode hops out of TEM00? At a sub 50% battery charge the laser operates in TEM00 until the battery dies. At above 50%, the only way I can consistently keep it from mode hopping is by cooling it off in my freezer for about 30 seconds before turning it on. I live in hot south florida so our usual temperature for this year is about 75-80F and its hard for me to keep it in TEM00 when outside. I dont really know much about how the voltage of the battery affects the laser, but it says its a 4.2v on a full charge and 2.7v on an empty charge. Could this have any significance to the mode hop?

Basically I'm just looking for an answer on if I should get a new, more reliable battery or could it just be my laser prefers cooler temperatures?

Thanks for reading :)

Hello Frank and Welcome to LPF

Since most green lasers out there use DPPS (Dioded Pumped Solid State)
technology they are very sensitive to temperature.... so it's not
a battery issue. Also mind that your batt should go under 3.2V otherwise
you will kill it....

Isn't it abnormal for a green laser to work better when its colder, though? I thought most green lasers worked the best when warmed up or in a hotter climate.

It's a mode hopper. Higher mWs greenies 150mW and up are known to do that from what I've seen. That's why I stick with a 100mW, nice thin beamed laser. It's up to you, if it's in its 7 days, I'd see if you can return it and save up for a 100mW-150mW one that can focus and has a bigger host. Contact Max at lazerer through their emails, tell him its mode hopping and see if you can return it for some store credit or something along those lines.

Or you could just live with it :D
All up to you.
Good luck

It looks so fantastic when it stays in TEM00 but otherwise it splits into two different beams and the dot looks like crap and looks less bright :( I think I'll have to send it back to him and see what he can do. Thanks for your replies, guys.

So a bit more info.. the laser consistently stays in tem00 when the battery voltage is between 3.2-2.7v. Unfortunately the battery is only 880mah so I get max like 15-20 minutes of tem00 before I have to recharge the battery. Are there any compatible batteries for this laser (16340) that have a voltage closer to 3v for most of its capacity? Because it seems like if I could find something like that I could avoid having to send it back and go through all the trouble.

Sorry for double post

Well you could use CR123 batts which are rated for 3V
