Hi LPF,
Her is a copper pen i machined in it is a PLP 520 B1 diode / G2 lens / 145mW
Takes 2-10440 cells. Enjoy folks, Beam shots after i eat supper..
Oh changing the set screw to a 4-40x 1/16 Brass..And will make a copper focus adapter later.

Beautiful Rich, solid copper pen build, yes! But I think there's a typo it says it takes two 19440's ?? I'm thinking 10440's or is this something real special?

Either way, it a beauty. All I can say is eat quick, because I too am looking forward to the beam shots. :)

The plp 520b1 is a great color. :gj:

Very nice buddy, yep this one I like, I haven't done any full copper hosts because I've seen the brown it turns into and with all those grooves it's going to be a challenge to keep it nice,

But I herd someone mentioned a clear coat of gloss for metal I was thinking about trying some soon, What do you think!

I have an acrylic coat on two copper hosts and they are as nice and shiny as the day I got them a couple of years ago. It is important to have the copper as clean as possible before applying the clear coat to it.

Thank you all for the replies, full copper pens are a nice touch for the SM's . keeping them shining is a small chore but i don't mind at all. A clear coat would be the answer to a care free appearance . might have to give that a shot. Sorry about the Beam shots passed out after supper felt great . Tomorrow is another day ..
The copper is a PIA to machine gets really hot under the tool and grabby to. Many small passes are involved to achieve a smooth surface before sanding and buffing..

It's hard to see the scale of the small size through the pic but getting the idea:)
Your right, perfect diode for it..and adding the brass set screw is a nice touch to the theme of the build..
Rich you made your own end cap switch as I see??;)

By the way, what did you eat for supper that you got all sleepy?:whistle:

Well by the size it's 5 inches long without the focus adapter, but i am going to make a copper adapter shorter with exit holes to show the beam. Yes i made the end cap with the switch small stuff takes a while to make. And also copper gets hot fast under the tooling so it needs a break to cool down. Glad you like it buddy. Thinking about another one to ,but takes 1=10440. This one takes 2-10440's i have a spacer in the tube. Maybe making one with 2-14500's but it will be a bit larger. Will post some beam shots later on.

The acrylic coating is forever slightly tacky. Not to the touch but if the piece is set on another painted surface it will grab after sitting for a day or two.

First of all, that's a nice host you've made there. I've been looking for a skinny all-copper build for a while. If you ever make them in a one-cell design, I will be all over that. (and probably if you sell the 2-cell too)

As for copper hosts in general, I kind of like them slightly patinated. Very occasionally I take the diode modules out and wipe down the host or heatsink with a bit of vinegar to brighten it. If you want even more vigorous cleaning of it, salt can be used as a gentle non-scratching abrasive.

Hi E,

Thanks I like copper also even though it's rough to machine. Takes longer but with it. As for polishing to touch up copper I use a jeweler rag. One side is compound and the other side is soft buffer. I get them for about 4.00 at Wally mart. I will be making these again in one and two cell versions soon . They will be polished smooth and bright and also with grooves and reliefs. And will be making some 14500 copper pens also. Just a tad larger.
