I Decided to take a foto of the head while in operation of my dx true 30mw running at 4.5 volts I have a modified fujifilm digital camera that does not let any visible light in and only the IR passes and the camera assigns a false color to the IR. considering I have heard stories about High IR coming out of the dx models I took a photo have no idea how scientific it was but here is what I got . doesn't seem like much IR goes beyond the end of the barrel and the beam isn't visible in the photo.

take a picture of the spot on the wall to see how much ir actually exits the barrel

Yes unfortunatly the spot on the wall shows up too but that might be the extreme brightness overpoweri g my crude filter on my camera or maybe its all IR who knows I'll try to post some pics tomorrow. gonna try and put an IR filter from a video camera and see if the photos change. Still running happily on 4.5 volts wish my diode luck

i dont believe ive ever seen the beam of an ir laser no matter how powerful it is. there is a very slim chance you wont see a dot.

I have done this same thing with a webcam and you can see the dot on the wall. Its just about as colimated as the green spot. I dont get why 8/10 people say that the IR light spreads out like a flashlight as soon as it exits when you can clearly see that isn't so.

Look in the multimedia section for the 2w IR laser with the hacked CVS camera.

Let's start out by saying i'm not a scientist and have no background in optics or lasers. This is the way I see it concerning my DX 30mw
The optics are about 10mm deep in the barrel of the Laser and as my picture shows there does seem to be an inverted cone of IR Light and it stops there if there was IR continuing you should also see it to some degree in the beam. What I think is happening is that the IR is being reflected back in by the threads and the cap after the lens, considering as stated before there is about 10 mm of space between the last lens and the actual hole in the cap. As far as the Beam showing up on the wall i'm under the impression that it is just so bright it overpowers my filters made from exposed film on my camera, I also think this because the spot shows up the same size in regular photos and as far as I remember it shouldn't IR travels differently than visible light infact i needed to mod the focus on my camera to compensate for this.

Let me know what you guys think.

I will do this when I get off work. However, mine is running off 2 e[sup]2[/sup] lithiums rather than the 4.5v tgm is running his off of.

Ok, I finally got around to doing this.

looks pretty dim but each camera shows it differently

Those were taken with an unmodified logitech quickcam pro, one with a small lamp on. The vids were taken just to show that its not just a cone of IR these lasers put out, as so many people on the DX forums keep saying.

4.5v is far too much... Enjoy your 30 now before it dies, the drivers cant handle any more than 3.5 volts.

Re: NIR  Photo of DX True 30mw running at 4.5

Ref: I'm thoroughly convinced.
It's pretty clear that those glasses block *all* green light, and that invisible dot on the wall that can only be observed through a shoddy webcam can only possibly be IR.
I don't see why people would think IR would colminate *that* much differently from regular light... it is after all, regular light. That'd be like saying you can't focus your camera on blue and red things at the same time since red focuses differently as it's not "regular light". It seems only logical to me that the IR would focus as a dot as well... maybe ever so slightly out of focus, but it's still a beam.
Props for brining this to people's attention.. You can never be too careful around invisible blinding radiation.

Re: NIR  Photo of DX True 30mw running at 4.5V

It's not cause it is or isn't regular light. It's the fact that IR comes out of the pump diode and/or the YVO4 while green comes out of the KTP and the green beam has a different divergence and diameter to begin with. The lenses are set to collimate the green beam :p Btw it's not a question of being out of focus, it's just a question of divergence. As single mode lasers are pretty damn coherent , you're not gonna see an out-of-focus laser dot no matter how many lenses you put it through.

I put a powerfull IR from a fast CD burner in an aixiz module, and managed to see the beam on a web cam, when i pointed it almost directly at the camera (slightly below it), but i did have to use lots of smoke..

I think if the camera was modified, the beam might be quite visible..
