I am a newbie to lasers, so today I got my first green laser. I got a Wicked lasers CORE 5mW. Does anybody know if and how to make this burn, light matches, pop balloons, etc. I think this is an awsome laser, but of course it left me wanting more...lol :). Is it possible to do a pot mod? Any info would be great!

You need at least 50 mw before you can start burning stuff... Do not pot mod it unless you want magic smoke...

i played around with pot modding mine since i wanted to use the host for something else any way. the most i ever got was <20mw and the fet or whatever it is on the back got too hot so your either gonna kill the driver or the diode.

So I pretty much got a nice pointer, no way to burn or have fun?, what about the cap kits you can buy?....Man...this sucks, now I want to order another one....lol..MORE POWER! :p

I have seen videos of people actually managing to pop a balloon with some kind of collimation aka Cap set but you really wont do much in terms of burning with green light. But I still have an idea.

If you really want to burn but without green light, you can take out the crystals set and all and you will have a powerful short range IR burner.

Nope... Pot modding usually makes the power go down. Green lasers are usually set at the perfect point, to much or to little current won't make it work. Any pot-modded videos of 5mW lasers burning things are completely fake. To easily burn, you need 95mW... You could replace the IR diode with a slightly higher powered one, but it still wouldn't be enough to burn things and to much power would burn the crystals.

If you want a higher powered laser then I would try to avoid buying from wicked as there lasers have been known to be overpriced and underspec. Nova lasers are far better as far as reputation is concerned.

but yeah, pot modding is not really worth it cause A. you could brake it and B. most laser pointers run at the highest power they are capable of.

Thannx for the help. I would like to build a blu ray laser, can someone tell me where to get the diode module with leads on it for a good price. I am all of the sudden facinated by these things, but I want to cut and burn at a lower cost than store bought. I now have the diodes ripped out of cd burners, dvd burners, and want a case to put them in, any suggestions?

I don't think so..............

The IR diverges so much without a lens... that you're not going to burn squat...
Unless you mean....  really short range like 2mm from the actual Laser Die...

Here's all the insight you could ask for as a beginner, and a bowl of grits!!

...if you manage to build (or buy) a green DPSS, I've found that burning starts around 30-50mw with a well collimated beam (1 - 1.5mm).  The lower end of the aforementioned power range can be assisted by focusing to a tight beam waist with a magnifying glass.  At this point you'll want safety goggles coated for 532nm (and preferably 1064 and 808 as well!) for your eyes' sake, plus to aid in seeing when you have focused the spot to as close to a pin point as you can.  But really, burning with green doesn't get fun until the 125mw+ area (in my opinion).

I wouldn't advise you to fool around with high power IR until you know more about lasers...they are dangerous enough when we *can* see the beam.

Well explain this. http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=w-gqaDXexU8

Here is my explanation....

It is obvious by that Video that the laser being used has a lens in it to focus the
beam.. There is no proof on that video that a lens is not being used..

With a little observation... you can see that the person holding the laser...
moves it.. to and from... the matches... to find the best focal point of the beam..
Therefore there is a very good possibility... if not a certainty that a lens is being
used to focus the beam onto the matches to light them...

It really isn't good to leave the matches in there like that, you should blow them out or else you might not have anymore matches left :p

Its obviously possible to adapt the optics such that they focus the IR - its probably not even that difficult to do. The pump in a 5 mW green usually has enough power to light matches like that, but under normal operation (i.e. with the stock optics and crystals in place) it just doesnt focus to a tiny point in front of the laser.

Also, if things are built right, most of the IR pump energy doesnt make it out at all, it should be absorbed by the crystal set. IR will leak out more easily if the wavelength is off (e.g. cold laser).

As far as modding that core laser goes: I'd keep it and build or buy a 200 mW red laser for about the same price the core was... nicer to play with, less work and probably safer that tinkering with IR.
