Lenses only bring the angles into focus. The line is a focus of the emitter shape, corrective optics make that line more into a circle by compressing it.

Divergence grows with emitter widths.

Turning a raw diode beam into a spot is collimation of the angles, when doing this the source beam expands in the near field and decreases in the far field. All diodes can be colimated but the beam will be huge if the initial divergence is also quite large.

So when making a laser for shows the source need to have low initial divergence in order to colimate it and still have a beam that fits on Laser scanner mirrors which ideally means < 3mm

For Laser pointers this does not matter because it is not required to have a <3mm beam.

All diodes can be used / colimated but the trade of is beam diameter.

RA_Pierce: you don't need to have a special lens produced; you can buy larger lenses already and make a broader 3 element colimator but that is a trade off when you can do it with prisms.

I don't know the specs of the 3-element lenses but they don't get as close to the diode as the G lenses so some of the beam gets cut off and that is where most of the power loss comes from. This "cropping" effect and the longer focal length is what makes the divergence a little better."

The reason for the cut off is not due to distance from the diode, it is that the divergence has been lowered which results in a larger beam inside the 3 eliment lens, you are actually cutting off the real size of the beam.

I did a lot of research into diode colimation and have a huge test stck of lenses numbering around 3,000: so when I start to try a diode I can find pretty quick the right lens combination for a desired target beam.

Thanks for the info. I didn't know the stuff about the 3 element lens.

Yes, beam correction optics like cylindrical lenses and anamorphic prisms will improve the beam profile.
But these are not practical for handheld lasers which is what this forum is all about.......

Naaaahhhhh...... Anamorphics....and even Cylinderical lenses can be incorporated into even a medium size Hand Held....( Search Tridentis )

Well...OK....The Tridentis is a little on the ...er....ah...large size....but...the Anamorphic portion is not big.....and THAT module could be coupled to any single diode. See drawing / pic... about a one (1 )inch cube !!!

IF... READ...IF these 520 Bad Boys are similar to the 9mm 445 module.....My prediction is that one would get a very decent beam ( Read only slightly rectangular ) using the O-like Glass lens...coupled to a small Anamorphic module....as is used on the Tridentis !!

Considering the relative luminosity of the 520nm line....THAT would make a VERY VISABLE, beautiful deep green beam HH. NOW.....just wait for the unit price to tumble down...and away we go !!!!!

IF... READ...IF these 520 Bad Boys are similar to the 9mm 445 module.....My prediction is that one would get a very decent beam ( Read only slightly rectangular ) using the O-like Glass lens...coupled to a small Anamorphic module.

CORRECT!!, and according to the datasheet; the optical angles are all fine to create a reasonable beam; but the emitter which is not documented could be much larger and that would certainly blow all theories out of the window.

The only real way to know is to buy a few diodes and try.

HAHAHA..Andy !!! " Buy a Few " ya say ...THAT's funny !!! :crackup: Whereas ,I would luv to prove my theory concerning this " Green Hydro Dream "..." Early Adaptors " tend to get royally screwed !!!

There are some " Deep Pockets " here and over at PL.....Maybe they will cough up the CASH !! ??The big question is EMITTER SIZE !!! That is the foundation that we start with !!!...and THAT will drive the optics correction. :(:(:(

The limiting nature using Anamorphic Prisms is .....the more magnification (correction) one tries to get from the prisms...the higher the incidence loss becomes. Magnification / beam correction is set by prism angle relative to the beam entering the prism set. As one rotates the prisms...in an attempt to reach a good beam geometry ( Read less line...more spot)...you get to a point where you drop 20 ~30 % power out....WELL....that's not gonna do !!! A small optics loss is acceptable...SOoo...what else do we have in the " Optics BAG-O tricks " ???

Cylinderical lenses COULD have more correction strength and be an option !!!!....and may be a final solution !!! They have NOT been used in a HH....YET !!! But.. I have a design where they COULD be used ...in a SMALL size round module. In using Cylinderical lenses to correct beam astigmatism...lens to lens distance is critical...as is correct radial alignment between the two lenses !!....SOoooo....the typical screw in~screw out set-up to set distance ...will NOT do. We need a " Better Mouse Trap " !!

Optics MANY times has trade-offs. That's just physics for ya !!! It can be a real PITA....TO many LAWS !!!

Anyway....for those hav'in the " Green Hydro Dream " The cost of the optics is very small....compared to the CURRENT cost of the LD....Mmmmm.....
which should be called the...." GHD-520 " hahahaha !!! Should be a very interesting saga !!!

Instead to wait and then loose time testing: How about doing a "Team Buy", where a team of say 20 members chip in to buy one or two diodes for testing and lens selections for different beam requirements, then the resulting info is given only to the team members along with lens part numbers and lens supplier details.

Then I am sure by the time the testing phase is complete the diode will have fallen in price, or its end use will have been found leaving them far cheaper.

I certainly could do the testing after being the one who found the right lenses for the Mitsubishi P73 red diodes.

Anyone else interested to be in such a team?

techhood was selling for 950 as well, they raised the prices on the first day.

Yep besram is selling for $25 cheaper. I always include the shipping price with the price of the item. People on ebay like to drop the item price but raise the shipping to make it seem like it's a better deal when it's not. I have seem many people get fooled by that. Techood originally was selling for 950 with free shipping

Edit: it's good nobody is buying from either of them. Maybe they'll get the message that few have the money to buy a laser diode for 1k USD when it will go down eventually anyway( hoping of course :D)

How do you have way cheaper diodes? They are 658 and 650 USD respectively.
It ALSO says you stock 10,000 diodes. Interesting.

Wondering what we WILL get if we order one...
