I've been reading around on making a green laser for a couple days now. Iv got a pretty good concept on the whole thing, just a few questions.

I want a nice visible beam, mostly at night. What mw do i need to accomplish this?

I know the dangers of strong lasers, but if i stare at the dot on the wall would that cause damage to my eyes? Or does it have to be a direct/reflected hit to the eyes from the laser.


Finally, i want the weakest laser possible to get a visible beam. Does anyone have a write up or plans on one? Maybe with a part list?

with a true 5mW green you will see a beam at night! any thing greater then 20 mw you will get a solid beam better. any thing over 50mw your going to get a bright solid beam!

in regards to saftey.. no you wont go blind (or get eye damage) if you look at the dot on the wall... but if you look at it close up it could... and yes you will get eye damage from direct or indirect (reflected) light. just to be safe.. get/make a cheap laser and buy a set of laser goggles!

Wait, do you want to build a green laser as in buy the module, the host and batterys, then assemble them into a green laser. OR Do you want to buy the diode, the crystals the IR filter and the assorted fancy optics and align then to the nearest tenth of a millimeter to produce green light?

If its the first one, you find plenty of kits and tutorials on how to do that on this forum.

Well I want the module and the host. I don't know anything about crystals. Should I build my own or just buy one? What's a good 50 mw one for under 100 bucks?

You should look on o-like.com for modules, and one of JayRob's excellent green kits for a host. O-Like units are almost always over-spec and they are a trustworthy company (even if the site is a little hard to understand).

actually the tactical ultrafire laser is a complete laser.
correct me if im wrong, but im pretty sure that the link to the second laser is just a host.
there is no module inside.

The tactical ultrafire is a complete laser.
I actually own a 100+mW version of the same laser, it was my first and I love it.

Only problem I have with it is that it is kinda bulky and not very pocket friendly. All in all it is a great laser and susie has the best customer service. She told me that the 100mW ones were tested by her at nearly 140mW.

Just remember it is a case positive set up like most greens.

Edit: matt beat me to it, but the second one has an output mW spec so I thinks its a complete.

Should i worry about goggles if i plan on using it mostly outside?

Would it hurt my LCD flat screen tv if i pointed at it?

Well i just ordered the 50mW green torch from o-like.com. Hopefully it will be here soon. I live in midwest USA, so it'll probably take like 2 weeks. Anyways, i also gave them the wrong address in paypal..so hopefully the email i sent them will clear that up.

Any laser over 5mW can damage your eyes very easily and a <100mW should be treated like a gun. If you just used it outside it would be fine, but trust me you are going to be tempted to bust it out every chance you get so I would recommend you get glasses. There arel alot of reflective objects outside (like your tv screen which isnt outside!)that you might accidentally hit.

Some cheap glasses can be found for around 8 dollars, but I would still recommend you get certified glasses. If your laser is over 5mW GET GLASSES!!!

I think I remember someone saying they could not get susie to change the address because of fraud risks. sry

Don't point high powered lasers at LCD monitors. The laser light can harm pixels on the screen resulting in discoloration or simply dead pixels. CRT monitors however seem to be much more robust by virtue of there design and i regularly shine my blu ray at it and watch it glow:D
