New to high powered lasers and lookin' for a burner

Hey, I'm new to high powered lasers/laser pointers and I'm looking for a burner preferably over 75mW and under $300, preferably less. I'm pretty sure that a green laser is the way I want to go for the power and price I want, not to mention the style

I've looked around and the best thing I can find at a good price would have to be the 125 mW Green Laser Pointer from skylasers.net as it meets the FDA standards, is (as I mentioned) at a good price, and has a nice power output.

The one thing I'm worried about is the fact that I've had a hard time finding a review on this product. I'm not sure how well this laser's beam is focused to allow for burning, or the quality of the laser beyond the 6 month warranty. Are there any lens caps compatible with this laser to make it more suitable for burning, or any simple ways that I can modify the lens for burning?

Would you recommend this laser to some one looking for a quality, well-priced burning laser, or would you recommend a different laser for my needs? (include a link)

A lot of people have liked Optotronics green laser pens.

o-like.com 47 dollar 200mw red laser is a GOOD burner, but if you want a good green laser that can burn you're going to have to spend more. My friends 80mw can still light matches but if you want to say cut out holes in newspaper it can't do that, his 265mw green can't even do that

For an extra $100 you could just get the 100mw focusable green laser from skylasers. You probably already saw that, but that's the only good burner I can think of...

So if i'm looking for a burner the best choice would be a red laser?

And is the power out-put chart on sky lasers accurate? If so shouldn't a 125-150mW green laser be sufficient for burning?

Optotronics was my second choice but I liked SKYlasers better for there FDA compliance and the power adjustment options.

If you want an 100 - 125mw average burning laser, go for focusable from skylasers. If you have the extra cash buy an RPL 165mw or more from optotronics, great laser.

So as the pen sized lasers do not have an adjustable focus they wont be able to burn? That makes the power output burning chart very misleading.

You can build an 8x bluray for $300 that will cut white paper. Go check out the bluray section you will find tons of information there. Bluray burner for the win.

If you want a burner, red or violet is the way to go. Go ahead and buy a 100mW green for the beam and everything, a 100mW green laser has the best brightness/price ratio you will find from most companies. Then get yourself one of the focusable 200mW red lasers from one of the many recommended sites on this forum for under $50. Doing this you should stay well under budget and you will have lasers for show and for burning. If you have a little extra to spend go ahead and get your self a blu-ray (violet), you can pick up one of those here for around $75, the cool effects of the laser are worth it.

Did you see the review for that focusable 200mw green supposedly better than the red dilda? It's 150 dollars, with larrys lens and housing for a little over 200 dollars you should have a visible green beam that can burn. Larrys lens should add power and a tighter beam (just look at the reviews)

It's on rayfoss.com and the thread is in the reviews section I think. Big heatsink too! Its much bigger than both models of dildas

Wow, thanks styropyro. Your suggestion was perfect for my needs and I'll start looking at the sites for the 200mW red lasers listed on this site! I'm glad to be part of such a responsive forum, you're all very helpful! Thank you all!!

Lykes2burn look at this

http://laserpointerforums.com/f52/rayfoss-200mw-532nm-rf532-200mw-flx-41977.html

Burns better than the Red, and you can see the beam easily (my friends 200mw red is only a little stronger than my 6mw green) So if you want to see the beam you might want that.

Oh and like I said you could always get more performance with a new lens.

Don't forget safety glasses either when you're burning! I know a lot of people don't use them but it is definately a GOOD idea if you want to see. If you are still stubborn and dont want to shell out 50 dollars for certified goggles or even 40 dollar non certified, I GUESS (tech is going to kill me) get one of these. Better than nothing but please get some good goggles.

for greens
Professional Anti Green Laser Glassess $7.99 - Free Shipping
for green

I have a friend who has already damaged his eye and is now much more cautious and scared, he's lucky.

I think so, it does require the key for a safety feature and customs doesn't confiscate them. Why does it need to be fda compliant? Just be responsible, even with fda compliant lasers if someone isn't responsible they can still damage thei own or others eyes

i contacted skylaser. they told me that they could make a laser with BETTER divergence.. around 0.5 mrad (wow) without cost more. BUT... the initial beam diameter should be larger.. about 2 mm.. they don't know if more or less.. they just told me 2 mm

I DON'T KNOW hod bad could burn a 125mw green laser with 22 mm beam.. but i am SURE that i would love a 0.5 mrad divergence!! ....divergence.. or burning capability ..? bho.

they also told me they CAN set the LOW POWER MODE as low as i WANT...generally it put at 20% of power.... but you could do more or less that 20%......

i think this is a great service. i 've never seen a 0.5 mrad laser pointer. .
