On YouTube there is a video where someone modifies a 5 mW green laser into a 100 mW laser. Since I am not allowed to post the link, I'll just say that the title of the video is "HOW TO TURN A 5MW LASER INTO A 100MW LASER"

The problem is, I don't know what brand this guy uses! I've searched all over and can't find a green laser with a top that conveniently unscrews like that!

What brand of 5 mW green laser has a screw top and can be modified like this?

Also, where can I buy good yet affordable safety goggles?

you can mod a green laser, just not that much. itll just start to kill the diode. your not really changing the diode, your just increasing the power, and working the diode if you want to experiement, get some cheapo laser you dont care about anymore.

I believe that the guy in the video has a very high tolerance for pain cause he is holding the soldering iron on a part that would be hot enough to melt solder... You can increase the power by a little bit but turning the pot with checking the current or anything is mostly going to kill the pump diode and the crystals can only do so much. It makes more sense to simply buy a stronger laser then to try to mod one. Search DPSS to find out how green lasers work and it might give you more understanding as to why this hack is mostly ineffective. You might also be
able to remove the module and replace it with a stronger one like this: http://o-like.com/b2b_cpinfo.asp?id=909

yeah, the olike idea is good. i mean, the only hard part is removing the old module. the driver and spring are all presoldered to the olike module.

Hmmm. Interesting.

So I can buy this olike module, remove the module from some other laser pointer and simply put the olike one in?

More importantly: Is this module legal in the USA?

EDIT: Where else can I buy a module like that? Sorry to sound stingy, but I am not going to order anything from a site that is unsecured and isn't even encrypted.

2nd EDIT: Even more disturbing is that this site has no privacy policy, and they want my PayPal or credit card information via e-mail. I don't care what kind of praise people give this site, I am not buying from there.

as an oem-module, it could be legal to sell them. your 100mw pointer will definitely be illegal. the max legal output is 5mw in usa (i think), even 1mw in some countries.
you are absolutely right to look for googles.

you send them a mail with your order and paypal-account. they send you an invoice to your paypal-account. you log in to paypal and transfer the money.
what exactly is insecure with that? what do you want to gain by encrypting any of the mails/websites? the only time you definitely need strong encryption is when accessing your paypal-account. this will be encrypted.
but yes, better safe than sorry. too many people have no clue about the dangers in such scenarios. it doesnt happen often, but people get their bankaccount emptied.

The pot mod is understandable, although unwise and the phrase "be sure, that the screw is tight" is very "untechnical" :) But the part with "burning out" this component is completely ununderstandable. This boards are soldered by baking them at 240°C for 10-30 seconds at peak temp. What should heating with the soldering iron for some seconds change? I do just that if I solder them by hand :)
