Where the graph dips at less than 100mw's is when the laser is beginning to heat up. Come to think of it, I think if you divide the numbers on the bottom of the graph by 2 it will be close to the actual seconds the laser was graphed.

I admit I really need to time it to be sure but I think it's close. For it's rated duty cycle of 90 seconds, and considering it is an X105, I am not complaining. It is doing what it was designed to do.

Other than that, I agree with you. :) The main point I was trying to make is the regulator in the Nova does a good job. It doesn't matter what battery chemistry is used...the diode is drawing the same amount of current as is evidenced by the graphs. I know that in order to regulate the output the laser would require additional heatsinking or a TEC like used in Labbys, and use of a photo diode. I don't know if Nova makes use of the photo diode in its X series of lasers.

Larry...no problem. :D I guess I should have explained what I meant exactly by regulation in the first place, but I thought it was pretty clear. Of course we know no hand held greenie pointer will maintain a consistent output. But we do know we are happy with Nova and I was just trying to show another reason to be happy with their lasers.

I really need to get you to converted to Eneloops....LOL>

Is that with or without a lens?

Seeing that video, i think you should get an RMA....

Something just doesn't seem right...better to get it looked at while under warranty!

Nova will take care of you!!!

Keep us informed!!!

that was with a lens. with out a lens, even when it mode hopped, the dot looked fine. could the fact that it was cold have anything to do with it?
when i shot that vid, i just put fully charged nimh batteries in that were fresh off the charger. i when switched to slightly used alkilines and it hopped once more and was fine there after.

you know, neither of my CNI pens (X-85 and a 112mW from pseudo) seem to mode hop on low batteries. they just flicker and die. not permanently die, of course, just til new batteries are put in :)

Or as I posted in the other thread...your nimh batteries might not be performing like they should. But marianne raises a good point as I have never seen what the laser does when the batteries get low. So it could be temp. related.
