Gearbest has some laser they claim is military grade for $8.5 which I get is not true but is it at least 5mW? Claims a starry sky with cool patterns but how durable is this device? I just want a good first laser :/

Well you get what you pay for. It will probably put out 30ish mW. They only say five to get it past customs.
You said you wanted a good first laser eh? Well It probably wont be the worst....
You have safety glasses yet? These green cheap lasers put out a lot of IR that you cant see, for most of them do not have an IR filter. I lot of people here build and sell lasers too. Just dont impulse buy.

Thanks a lot dude!!! But those $8 should be fine as long as I spend another $8 on a filter & goggles right?
Then how are 30mW so expensive on LaserGlow?

Because they are actually good quality in a lot of ways. Host. laser diode. Ir filter. Driver. I saw you went and ordered a five dollar laser on ebay. Like i said you get what you pay for. Kinda hesitant to give advice as this point.
I would still find some good quality safety glasses. This might not be the first and only laser purchase! Survival laaers had great decently prices ones
