I just ordered the following: Lazerer: LZSK - 532nm 400mW Green Laser Pointer w/ Case + Goggles

I've been both a Wicked Lasers and a Nova Lasers buyer in the past, but based on the general vibe I've gotten from these forums, it would appear that Lazerer is a good company to buy from these days.

However, does anyone here have any personal experience with the above laser?

I have the same model but from o_like only i don't have that silver ring in the middle , mine is still doing SUPER SCARY bright and eats away a full 18650 batt.

It doesn't make any mention of it on the product page, and this page is kind of confusing as well:
Power Guaranteed
It mentions: "*** If you are buying IR filter laser. We guarantee the power is 97% from the wavelegth of the laser. For those laser which IR not filterrd. IR power is counted into our calculation. ***"

How can I make sure that my laser will be IR filtered, or is it already IR filtered?

2. What battery (+ charger) would you recommend?
3. What's the battery life like?
4. How pocketable is the laser, is it that much larger than a pen-sized one?

Mine doesn't have a IR filter just a waterproof lens wich i removed.
Mine came with a cheap 18650 charger and batt
The batt life time is about 30 minutes max
The laser is pocketeble for me but a littebit on the bulky side.

1. It will not be IR filtered... if your order hasn't shipped contact Max, LPF member MaxLZR, and he might be able to install an IR filter for you... but it's not needed unless you want to burn with the laser, and will drop the green output somewhat as well.

2. Contact LPF member Larry DFW, he sells some great sanyo cells... this laser eats batteries for breakfast... literally, and a good battery makes a huge difference with it.

3. If you're using an unprotected 18650 battery, don't run the laser for more than 20 minutes with it.

4. IMO it's right at the limit of being pocketable... but it's not very thick so actually fits in my jeans or khakis with no issue.

I've always been under the impression that you should want your laser to be IR filtered, so should I be concerned that these, by default, are not?

Also, for those that are claimed to be IR filtered out of the box (let's say something from Nova, Dragon, Wicked, etc.) does the power really drop THAT much from the rated power??
Based on those power rating certificates from the review here, it looks like an 80% drop from ~ 400mW down to 80mW?

You misread... the IR filter drops the total output for that laser by ~75mW.

Oh, I see.
I guess it was difficult to read at that size.

So, what's the consensus here on IR filters.
Is a ~75mW drop worth having an IR filter for in exchange?

^^^The if you're not going to burn with the laser, and you treat it carefully, you don't really need an IR filter.

The reason some people prefer to have an IR filter is that most goggles do not protect from IR wavelengths, so if you catch a reflection, and your goggles only protect from 532nm... you could be in trouble. There are a few threads on this subject, use the search for more info.

Get it IR filtered...Remember you're buying it for the green light...not a wavelength that you can't see and is potentially very dangerous.

400mw - 75mw = 325mw (sorry to state the obvious) which will still be very powerful.

I just got a 175mw green (spec'd from Optotronics) and it is incredibly bright...

Personally I would sacrifice the 75mw knowing that my eyes are safe if the beam does hit my specs. What's the point in specs if they can't protect you.

So, just to be absolutely clear on this...
Will the IR filter simply just block out the IR and not affect the perceived brightness of the green light in the laser in any way whatsoever?

So basically, blocking out the IR will just limit the burning capabilities of the laser by ~ 70mW, but the brightness when shined will remain the same?

Might be worth another thread to grab the attention of the pros!

Btw my 175mw at night, outside, is a completely solid beam. It's literally like a lightsaber. Review coming soon.. :)

Bear in mind that if you get one that is focusable then at 325mw you can burn almost anything!

An IR filter does block out just IR, but since it is not perfect, the green output will also be slightly reduced.

The burning abilities of the laser will be a bit reduced.

Which brings me to one final point.... if you want to burn stuff, just buy a blow torch, it's cheaper and burns a lot better;)
