I'm considering saving up for one. They occasionally show up on ebay, and watts of 532nm for 2 grand is quite reasonable.

I don't want a safety talk, i know i'll need OD10 glasses, i know beam in the sky is a massive no-no, this can give serious burns, etc.

At any rate, does anyone have any experience with these? Particularly running them in cw mode. My ultimate goal would be to make the thing more compact, but in the meantime, does anyone think this would be a good investment? Either that or a 5 watt argon.

Not unless at the very least you have a good amount of previous experience with high energy q-switched YAG lasers. And that's kW of peak power, not W.

Adding to what ElektroFreak said, they're about as small as you're going to get them, and converting them to CW use is an incredibly complicated and intricate task, judging by what I've read on the subject, as you need to correctly control the crystal oven and a myriad of other stuff.

Well, i was almost done building an x-ray machine, [though i quit because it just doesn't intrigue me anymore], so i think i could handle the task...

BTW, whoever wants to buy all the parts to make an x-ray, pm me.

An Xray machine is hardly complicated compared to the z-fold optical cavity of a laserscope, I wouldn't recommend it

X-ray machine? Does that not just involve connecting up an x-ray tube to a high voltage power supply? :D

I think you'll find a laserscope a crapload more complicated than an x-ray generator.

I don't think any goggles would protect you from a direct hit of a laserscope, it would burn right through the entire thing, along with the front of your head.

If you don't have any previous experience with large lasers like this, starting with a laserscope is a bad idea. Plus places like LPF and PL don't like them so help will be limited.

At least one member has got a Laserscope over on PL so there might be the right place to ask for hands on experience but I have to agree with the cautionary posts so far. It was brought to a UK laser meet and even the expert knowledge there couldn't get it reliably working even given two whole days on it, AND they knew what was wrong!

A first build, it ain't!

Well, if you are all so against it, what else could be modified to get a few watts of green? I remember a post about some guy selling a DPSS UV laser, and those can become green with the removal of a simple crystal.

My advice is to just save for a Viasho/LaserWave/CNI lab unit, because DPSS UV systems cost a lot more than a few watts of green.

Yeah, but that takes me back to the laserscope thing... 2 watts of green typically costs $3k...

The laserscope would require a huge amount of work to get running in CW mode, and it's incredibly challenging, as Morgan said, even professionals couldn't get it working when they knew what was wrong with it, and it wouldn't be just a few watts, you'd be dealing with kilowatt pulses and around 40 watts CW, I know professionals who won't go near laserscopes because of how dangerous they are, heed the warnings, stay away lest an accident occur...

I don't think it's that we are, 'agin' it', per se, just wanted you to know what was involved.

Just out of interest, why a few Watts? Does it have to be green? What about CO2?

Nah, co2 lasers really can't be used for anything but burning. I'd just like a laser brighter than the sun, if you catch my drift.
