I'm thinking you'll need one that you plug into the wall and can be on all day. Not sure how to work that out, but I'm sure someone here will have a suggestion.

a ac to dc 3v(anything ~1a and up) will work and can be gotten off ebay for less than 20$ with shipping.

power supply is not a problem.
i can make a circuit using LM317 for 3v supply.

@drew
thanks for the details.i have some more doubts.will this laser be visible in day light.imean my exhibition stall will be under bright lights.so will this laser be visible.

below is my idea of placing the laser module.the laser diode and reflector will be hidden.

hmm... I thought you were looking to have a line projected on the floor, but based on your diagram, it looks like you want to have a visible beam around the entry, like a tripwire. It looks like you want the actual beam to be visible, not just a projected line - if that's the case, you're going to need some fog to make the beam visible. Going to a higher power is not a good idea for a public event. You don't want someone getting beamed in the eyeball with a strong laser.

If the projected line is what you want, you'll need two beams, each fed through a line generating lens. You could use two lasers, or a beam splitter that feeds to the separate line lenses.

I hope that you post pics of the final result so we can see how it went.

i wouldnt recommend more than 15-20mw for a public event and thats prolly gonna be a little strong. greens do have visible beams in lighted areas just not extremely bright areas unless you use smoke/fog.

greens are dpss. you may be able to use a lm317 to power an ir diode but aligning the crystals is a royal pain so its easier just to buy a laser module and get a power supply suitable for it. i realized you meant a real power supply and not a driver... ::)

explanation of dpss

no its not eye level.
it will be roughly 6-8 inches from the ground.
i want it to be like a entry line.so before entering in to the stall one needs to cross it.
and yes i mean just power supply not some driver.and i doubt abt using smoke and fog.isn't it possible to use just laser ? with at least moderate visibility?

so what is the final laser power and color shld i go for.

thanks once again for the responses.

If you want the beam to be visible in a highly lit place, your going to need >30mW , I'd reckon around 50-60mW of green should suffice. But you cannot use these powers unless you can guarantee that there is no way for the beam to get in someones eye.

yes that i can say.
the placement of the laser is such that, only feet of the user come in contact.
still i want to know whether 50-60mw laser is dangerous to human skin?

and any good and cheap place where i can find this 50mw laser?

Yuo would need a big fog machine or a pretty high power, enough to do some permenent eye damage before .25 seconds (.25 seconds is the time it takes to blink when a laser is shined in the eye).

okidoki..
lets just lower the power.i don't want to make ppl blind.
so tell me the best laser which is safe and can be visible moderately.as good as possible.
and some good source from where i can buy...
