there's no way for you to make the laser you have hotter, without modding it, which will ultimately kill it. There's a few things you could do, sell it and buy one from a reputable company, send it to someone on the forum to check what it's actually putting out, or return it if you still have the receipt and are able to.
240mw should put out more than a sting on your bare skin
try a few experiments to get an idea of what it's actually putting out, popping ballon, smoking leather, cutting electrical tape, and last lighting a match.

240mw is a reference to the max power of the diode, ie my Viper 125mw has a 500mw diode and produces 125mw..

First off welcome. Second learn about laser safety. 3rd stick around here for a while. Learn about lasers in general and wht they are capable of. Post pictures of the laser itself, beam shots in light and dark and we can tell ya what you have and what you can do with it. You can also get from there recommendations of where to buy a true 100+ mw laser at which point in time you will have the knowledge you need to not fry your eyes out while trying to "burn"

the 240mW laser is probably marked <240mW which means that it is probably WAY less then 240mW. There are some unscrupulous e-bay vendors that are doing this now. For example, I could legally and honestly sell you a 5mW laser marked as LESS THAN 500mW (since 5mW IS less than 500mW).

A 240 mW laser should burn your skin AND ignite matches as the PASS THROUGH the beam. I suspect you were taken advantage of. All hope is not lost. Post a pic or two and maybe we can help you mod it...

Sage advice from all corners !  This is awesome !

Complete these tests in this order -

Ask your Dad where he got it !
Post a pic here of it, and include any info you may have gotten from step one.
Wait for an answer :)

Sometime in the middle of all that - make sure you do not look down the barrel of it !

Get some safety goggles that block 532nm light - keep your eyes safe !
