Jetlaser PLE-PRO 520nm 1 Watt impressions

Today I received my PLE-Pro 1 watt 520nm laser.I got batteries with it...which are charging now.(They arrived a few hours after the laser)Protected tenergy 18650's.Yesterday I received and charged some Orbtronic 3400mah protected 18650's.I used a LUC V4. So I popped them in the PLE, put on the eagle pair goggles and went outside.It was still daylight but the sun was very low.I could see the beam with the goggles off.It was not too impressive.The dot on a distant target was bright...and focused to infinity it burned holes in leaves at my feet and 3 feet away or so.The focus feel is smooth but has a lot of backlash...my PLE is black anodized.It is done very well and the crown is not sharp, so getting the very nice screw on aperture cover off was easy.

I was kind of underwhelmed by the beam brightness.

During the day.

It is dark here now so I grabbed a nice 111mw DPSS with tight beam and compared them in the dark.


Well.....the PLE was a lightsaber and the 111mw looked very weak.

For epic beam viewing hilariousity the PLE was AWESOME.VERY!!!!!

The dot is a line...and very bright on the clouds.Divergence is nowhere near as nice as DPSS.I have not measured it yet but it will be multimode diode big for sure.

To sum up initial impressions...The focus mechanism is too loose.Too much backlash.In all other respects this thing is very, very fine.Powerful,beautiful, great feel.Threads, switches....very nice.The switches have a nice tactile click to them and operate perfectly.
Jetlaser sent me a small neodymium magnet too.I assume to use on protected flat top cells.Nothing in the instructions about it though.

And I really like the color compared to DPSS.Great laser!

I agree...but how careful I will have to be to avoid trashing the CCD!I will do a review of this laser as soon as I get a decent LPM.To be honest...there have been enough good beamshots of 520 1 watt lasers I seriously fear doing as well.

Epic and legendary it is however.The host is huge...and got slightly warmer with use.Getting such epic output without the temp sensitivity like DPSS has is really fun.

that thing is huge, all they need is a saber attachment and tadah the force will be with who ever own a jet laser.

For giggles I was comparing it to the wicked laser krypton.The PL-E is over 40mm in diameter and with the extension tube to run 18650's or 26650's 35 cm long!!!! The krypton is over 35mm diameter...and shorter at 247mm or so long.
For heat dissipation size matters.Throw in variable focus, better run times and a responsive customer service department...and 449 for the PL-E vs 999 for the krypton...

Actually the PL-E caused me to spend some money.I bought a Fluke 87V meter to keep close tabs on the lithiums and I bought a charger as well as cells and the Eagle Pair Laser goggles.All that cost almost as much as the krypton with a good charger.

The Fluke is wonderful BTW.It is the best meter I have ever owned...I have wanted one for years and managing the Lithium ions was a perfect justification.It will be perfect for tailcap current measurements too!

i know right i have had a 1200 mw 532nm from them not so long ago. it was very bright and was quiet a burner with it needle thin beam. i pointed them at a mountain from far away and i could see the dot!!! I wish they have more colour like the 589nm;561nm;556nm; so on.

you can shorten the handle and run it on two 16340s if you have them, obviously it won't run as long before needing a recharge. yes the magnet was for flat top cells, usually unprotected.

I agree the only down side of these is the play on the focus. the divergence is bad but much better than the really bad blues and reds

been meaning to do a review on mine. i feel bad, because I promised grey I would. he hooked me up, I actually retured a different pro after burning out the diode and wanted the 520 diode put in instead. but their pro model had changed some since then and they just sent me a brand new pro 520 like yours for a repair cost of like $125. this was back when that diode was like $500 too. the pro cost more then too. now those diodes are less than half that price

good luck finding a laser with overwhelming beam brightness in the day

The small cells just don't make sense to me in such a huge laser so 18650's it is!I have never seen a laser as bright in the daylight before....but I really wanted a WOW beam.The laser is the brightest I own by far but even so the first impression was meh...because daytime!This simply reflects how silly I was being as I could not wait until it was dark to try it!

I think at 449 it is a huge bargain considering it's very fine finish and great ergos.And the beam at night is EPIC and all I hoped for and then some.

I don't want a beam expander...no need.The beam looks great when focused tight...but it just is not as tight as a DPSS would be.I knew that going in and I am completely satisfied with how it performs.

The only nit is focus backlash...otherwise it's simply awesome!!!

And the focus thing is not that big a deal......


PS...I will NEVER run unprotected cells in series.There are a very few 26650's which are protected...but in the meanwhile the Orbtronic 18650 3400's seem excellent so I will be using those.They say they are panasonic cells with a seiko designed protection PCB...they are highly regarded by the high power flashlight community.

For daytime viewing of a 532nm beam you need more than 1W ---1.5W= depending on atmospheric conditions. So your first impressions were good if you could see it at all.

When viewed at night of course it is another story--very bright almost solid looking beam.

I was just comparing it to my first diode green a sky 520 pen.The pen is 5mw or 50 mw selectable and I use NIMH AAA's in it.The little 50mw pen is visibly shorter wavelength compared to the 1watt 520.I hit some smoke from the wood stove high in the air with 1 watt.The whole area became green!!!!

Very freaking bright!It was cold and very dry here yesterday for the worst possible conditions for a very bright beam...and it was bright then.Tonight there seems to be more moisture so the 50mw 520 was gorgeous.

The PL-E was insane.

I had so much fun today.I called Laserbee and had an absolute blast talking to him on the phone.He is the second forum member I have ever spoken with live so it was a rare treat indeed.So a laserbee 2 is on the way!Soon I will be able to check every laser I own as well as review the PL-E 520.

Jerry was a hoot and I can't wait to put his LPM to use!

I have wanted one for a long time and now that I have entered class 4 territory it seems essential.I will have the place to myself week after next so I will do the review then.

The laserbee 2 deluxe came in the mail today.After reading the directions I checked some ebay pens a 405 and 650.Both were about 73mw.

The Jetlaser PL-E PRO 520 tested at 1224mw.

EPIC for 449.00 dollars!!!!

No wonder it melts holes in plastic so fast!!!!

I just ordered 4 26650 5200mah cells from orbtronics to see if there is any difference in power.Hot off the charger tenergy 2200mah cells could not do more than 1175mw.Fresh off the charger orbtronic 3400 were good for 1219mw@65 degrees F.When the orbtronics were down to 3.86 volts output dropped to 1125mw.I am curious to see how long the higher capacity cell will be over 1200mw.I also need to do more runs at lower temps like 50 degrees F to see what the power will be.

Hilarious fun laser for drilling plastic btw....this thing is a beast!!

The PL-E draws 2.75 amps with 2 charged 26650's while delivering 1.2 watts plus optical output power.I was surprised to see such high current draw.The 26650 cells allow for the power to not fade as fast as the 18650 cells. I had a bit too much fun burning stuff...the laser warmed all the way to 90 degrees from 66 degrees...way too much fun.What a beast!!!

I promised a review and have not posted it yet...because for my vacation I had the FLU.Even so I did the power/temp testing and did current draw measurements.I only need to find my old camera and do an accurate divergence measurement and I will be good to go.The storm Jonas dumped 16 inches on me so I was busy loading the woodstove.Aside from the joy of running amok with 1.2watts of 520 it was a very poor excuse for a vacation.I am just now feeling well...I have been sick as a dog since last friday!!!!

Work will be insane when I get back so it may be weeks before the photos go up.

I went to Jetlaser and can not find the PL-E PRO 520 in 1W for $449. Was this a sale, or am I just not seeing it? Can you post a link?
