IR in O-Like Modules

Does anyone know how many mW's of IR there are in the 130mW to 150mW 532nm modules? I know it varies from module to module but I just want an estimate. Can anyone guess how many there would be in the new 200mW module? Thanks.

Usually 10-15mW IR from the 130-150mW pointers. For the 200 I would guess 20mW~

You can roughly calculate 10% to 15% of total output on average...

Wow! That's much more than I expected. I was trying to decide between a Jayrob kit with an O-like 200mW at $261 with shipping, batteries etc. or the Opto 150mw pen averaging in the 170's with no IR, better divergence and for $200. Guess I'll go with the Opto.

It's your choice of course, but the building of a laser kit from Jayrob would bring you lots of satisfaction. Nothing like a laser that you have built up with your own hands.

I am sure I would love if I got a jayrob kit or if I got an Opto +150mW Pen. I'm not buying both so the question is which one would be the very best. This is when I bring in the pros and cons.

Jayrob DIY Green:
Pros
-Nice Look
-My own creation (with help of course)
Cons
-Price
-O-Like Module's Average Divergence

Opto 150mW Pen
Pros
-Tight Beam
-Price (when compared to jayrob build)
-IR Filtered and still average 170mW
-Runs off standard AAA (which can also be a con)
Cons
-Not as good heatsinking a jayrob build
-Definitley would not look as good as a laser in a Cree host with a tritium upgrade and full labels.

You can get a 200mw smaller portable green for something like 300 dollars in the CNI group buy.

I love Optotronics and can say nothing but good about Jack...

But I would say that one other thing to consider, is the fact that once you have a nice host with good heatsinking like my DIY green kit, it will always serve you for future modules that can easily be 'swapped out'.

One question I would make sure of, is whether or not the pointer style lasers from Optotronics are indeed IR filtered or not. I know that I have a couple of their weaker ones that were gifts with my RPL's, and they are not IR filtered.

But I don't know about the higher powered ones...

themandalorian: I was actually quoted $250 for a 200mW green. Unfortunately I am still trying to figure out which laser the CNI rep was talking about as there has been some dispute in the CNI 5th GB thread.

Jayrob: Optotronics does claim it is IR filtered, only 1-4mW or IR in the +150mW pen. I probably would order one of your kits if the 200mW O-like module was in stock and if there were positive (or any) reviews and LPM tests on it. But I don't know what's up over at O-like.I've emailed Susie and she hasn't responded.

If Susie (O-Like) uses her New Deluxe LaserBee I... she could data log her tests...
but that is up to Susie...

She's probably just swamped with orders or something.Didn't they add a lot of stuff overnight?

I have ordered one of these 200mW modules and will report back with the fit and power measurements:
DealExtreme: $46.81 200mW 532nm Green Laser Module (3V 11.9mm)

Sounds too good to be true... 200mW module for only $46 bucks!
Jay

P.S. I read on Optotronics' site, and it says the coatings will block 96% of IR. (pointer style pens) It does not specifically say IR filtered. A similar statement could be said about all cheap modules. I don't know about 96%, probably more like 90%.

I'm definitely eager to hear about the DX 200mW modules but I don't hold any high expectations. So the red and black wires just connect straight to the + and - on the battery right? It's not module-spring negative, case positive any more? I like the O-like style better. Would those fit in your kits Jayrob? Thanks.

It is still case positive I'm sure, and you could easily solder a spring on there, or just a contact point is all you need, if you have a spring in the tail cap of the host...

But yes, the o-like modules are what I designed my DIY Green kit for. The links to the o-like modules are listed in my thread:
http://laserpointerforums.com/laser_pointer_forums_3/forum/showthread.php?t=22520

That said, many modules would work for the host, it's just a matter of it being a 12mm module. (11.9)

The length doesn't really matter because you can cut springs?
