While waiting for a box to ship to my doorstep - it occured to me that I have no idea of what to do first with my spanking new Herc 475 - any suggestions? What would you try first? I know not to take it to work to do powerpoint presentations.

I assume they were out of Herc-500s? Lol.

You should totally use it to give powerpoint presentations!

(Seriously though, if your audience had safety glasses they would just see the dot like a 5mW green).

Speaking of presentations I just found out I got 95% for my presentation on software quality. It's the highest mark I've ever gotten at university =D

Yep they were out of Herc-500s so I had to settle for the Herc 475. Still quite a step up from my current <50mW model off Amazon. BTW, congrats on your killer presentation.

Nice buy! If I had just bought such a huge and powerful laser I would..
1) Get some goggles
2) Burn the hell out of my keyboard
3) Shine it all over the sky at night (noting that no planes are present)
4) Take it on some mountaineering and shine from one mountain top to another
5) Have fun frying the ant invasion in my garage
6) Fill my garage with smoke and play with my lightsaber (no shiny surfaces, I can cover all the walls of my garage in black cloth because I often use it for parties)
7) Line it up with my scanner and do some beamshows in the same garage

I think this is imposible, You would need several watts of red to get yellow from a 475mW green laser. Am I wrong?

Actually I'm told it factory tested at 488mW Avg with 563mW peak so I guess my <1mW red freebie laser pointer probably will not be enough to turn my green yellow. Oh well.

You can actually kill an insect with a handheld? I saw someone trying to kill spiders on youtube with his "powerful laser" and it didn't seem like he was having much luck to me. He was having to almost poke them in the eye with the thing and chase them down the stairs. Would'nt the spider/fly/ant think "hey, I'm getting hot (and blind)" and just move out of the beam? Or will my unit be enough to cripple them before they notice?

My laser should be here tomorrow morning (time is going to creep at work tomorrow for sure). I got one of those free floating electromagnetic globe units collecting dust (still floats in space but stopped spinning) - Maybe a deathstar planetary attack re-enactment?

Get a bunch of small mirrors, and clay to hold them, set them all around a room, and get the beam going all over the area, (minor mirror adjustments), then add some incense, or fog, and take dramatic beam pictures! LOL! -Glenn

The ratio to make yellow is usually quoted as 3 to 4 red for one green.. which would make 1.5W to 2W needed. However you can still make a nice yellow colour with just 1W, it would have a green tint to it but still look good :)
And yes Nomad, with my 173mW blu-ray focused I can slice the legs off an insect while it's walking and cook it alive.. I know, I'm sorry :(
With 488mW average you can instantly fry any insect which messes with you!
I think you will be quite surprised at just how strong that Herc actually is.

Just dial the Herc 475 down. as it is adjustable if im not mistaken.
Might still need a few good red's thou. :)
