Or there's a possibility that the switch itself is preventing the complete current from being pushed through the diode, which means the crystals doesn't have enough 808nm pump to lase properly.

That still doesn't make it any safer to go looking at :tsk:

My comments were directed toward FIREmateo and his reported problems.

#1 still applies to you, however.
If you have the tools, replacing the switch is pretty straightforward.
