Hulk Green Laser - 100mw Question

Hey everyone,

I've recently purchased my first laser. It's a Hulk 100mw laser from Dragon Lasers. I am pretty impressed with the range and the protective eyeware. Its perfect for star gazing. However I am little concerned that it doesn't light matches as well as I thought it would(not that I need it to). I set the laser on a match and gave it 5-10mins. Only got a black mark. I've tried writing in a black spot on the match but to no avail. Anyone know if I got anything to worry about?

Thanks, sevchess

If the laser is focused to infinity, depending on beam diameter, at 100mW it probably shouldn't light a match.

Try using a magnifying glass to focus the beam (IIRC the hulk is not focusable). Just be careful with reflections from the glass.

Yup, with low power you need to focus the dot even smaller and if its fixed focus your burning abilities will be extremely limited. As it goes 100mW is pretty minimal for burning anyway. Go for a 250mW+ 405nm focusable if your true goal is to burn.

I own a hulk 100 ( outputs 213mW stable :D) and based on the reports from other owners the output on hulks can vary from one laser to another. I would have to agree with infinitus. You can try using a magnifying glass to focus it, but to be honest 100mW isn't that great for burning.

The hulk is a solid laser, I've had mine for over a year and have had exactly 0 problems with it. While some of my other lasers have come and gone (405's 445's 635's) my hulk has made it through the entire time. That said dragon lasers is a bit overpriced and I have heard of other members having problems with some of there higher power 532's I have only had good experiences with my 2 purchases from them.

If you really want to burn things but not break the bank on a laser I would recommend buying a 405 or 445 from one of the great builders on our forum or from lazerer. Check out the buy, sell, trade section of the forum. Good luck.
