A year or so I bought one of the crystal assemblies off of EBay but was never able to get it to work with my ir lasers. Probably would have helped if I built some kind if rig to hold everything so I could work with the alignment.

Well, it looks easy when you see a diagram.. just point some IR laser at the crystal set and green will magically come out the other end.

The practical side is less simple though. Crystal sets have improved in recent years to the point where you can get a glimmer of green by just focussing the IR and then holding the crystal set at the right point (using pliers or something), but that won't give any real performance.

To get it working properly you need to get the correct distance from the IR focussing lens, proper orientation (and rotation) of the crystal set, and manage the thermal side of things. Nice for an experiment, but not very practical in terms of time and money spent compared to just purchasing a complete dpssd laser unit.

As for orange: forget it, much trickier than green. 471 nm might be feasible if you're really good at these things, but still expensive kit to experiment with!

oh okay...i do know that most pen lasers and flashlight style greens that are good quality use pump diodes that are rated exponentially higher than what the laser is being run at

Exponentialy[sup]???[/sup] No ::)

So at what wavelength is the IR that gets emitted from green lasers with no IR filter 808nm or 1064nm?     Bill

Both. Only there's usually slightly more 1064nm leakage than 808nm..
