Ok so i got a green laser today and im loving it!
But...
 I was wonder if there is a real big danger without having a IR filter.
I have a 50mw green laser if that is any help.

This is the filter its self

its kinda blueish and has like 3 or 4 different layers
can someone confirm this is a IR filter?
and is there any way i can tell if it will work on my 50mw green laserto block out the IR??

Kind of looks like one to me I'm thinking IR filters are a little lighter tented than that, though I could be wrong. Hopefully it wouldn't block any green light. Doesn't look like it would.

You can test it out. :) And the best way to test for IR leakage is to point the laser beam through a material that blocks out nearly all green light, then use a camera (if you still have one lol) and point it at where the beam would hit on the other side of the material. If you see a purple spot, that is IR leaking through.

Looks like an IR filter to me. I had a few just like that. It will block a small amount of green and ~100% of IR (tested with 600mW 808nm).

Like Moptsp said, use a camera to look for IR.
Film negatives pass IR and block green well, as well as coke and soy sauce... and the black plastic that covers the IR LEDs on some TV remotes.

Cellphone cams usually can pick up IR pretty well.

Hi guys. I'm a noob here and a noob to lasers. I just got a 50mW 532nm laser and a 200mW 660nm laser. These were relatively inexpensive and I'm concerned that they don't have IR filters. How can I check to see how much IR the lasers are putting out? I tried doing a search to see where I could buy some IR filters, but I didn't have much luck. I don't want to tear apart a bunch of electronics in case they don't have filters in them an I can't imagine that a lousy component wouldn't cost less than the whole device. Are these IR filters effective on higher powered lasers or will the lasers eventually burn through them?

I also ordered 2 pairs of glasses from dragon lasers (one for green and one for red lasers). Are they reputable and how effective are they with higher powered lasers? Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

If anyone is looking for IR filters, I have several that I'd be willing to let go just for the S&H FEES. Please send any requests to me via PM. Be sure to include your Forum name, Your Given name & complete address, & the quantity of filters you'd desire. These are from OPTOTRONICS, made of 1/8" thick glass, & are ~ 1" X 1" square. If you're good with a glass cutter, you can make 4 out of each one. Your local hardware store will cut them for you also for a negligible cost.

I'm new to lasers.. ive read somethings online about how to test if there is an IR filter but i dont think i have the necessary items.

If i take the pointer apart should it just be a small circle like film?

If its a cheapo china one then it most likely doesnt have one, however they arent that important with lower powers if your carefull and apply common sense. An IR filter should look like a thin circle or square that is over the aperture of the laser. You might not want to take it apart if your not sure what you are doing, if you misalign the crystals accidently it wont lase anymore, at least not green...
