Hi,

Can someone tell me why I get dot scatter. The lenses are new and clean. This happens after potmoding a 3.6v 360ma (measured at tail) to 600ma.

If I crank it up to 750ma scatter occurs almost instantly where as at 500-600ma it takes perhaps 5-10 seconds. No scatter at 360ma. But then of course much less bright green light

Thanks in advance!

Could it be your over driving the IR diode and it's changing it's beam shape

I'm only guessing, some one who knows for sure SPEAK UP we both want to know :D

It's a real shame there is still so much misinformation out there involving pot modding lasers. I'm getting real tired of telling everyone that comes in and references it that it is a bad idea and that it usually only causes problems and does not increase power output substantially, and I've only been active on here a short time!

Bottom line, set it back to the lower power it was at when you bought it. If you want more power, spend money on a higher power laser. You're probably overdriving the nonlinear cavity and causing multimode emission.

Thanks Sigurthr but really only your last sentence was related to my question. So what is multimode emission ?

I have other much higher power lasers and am just screwing around. However the diiference in power is quiite noticable on this laser after modding.

Don't you think that the Manufacturer set it at that power for
a reason...

If the Manufacturer could safely increase the output of that Laser
he would have done so to be able to sell it for more $$$.

If you want a good higher powered Laser... either buy one or
build one...

Due to many many Pot Modding experiences by many people
in the past... Pot Modding is generally frowned upon and NOT
recommended by the Forum community.

As was stated above... I would set it back down to where it
was to get the best beam quality back.
That is if you have not already damaged your Laser...

It also could be that the scatter is always there, but when you crank the pot up, it becomes bright enough to notice. The reason it takes more time at the 500-600 ma range could be the laser warming up and operating more efficiently. I'd suggest turning the pot back down and looking for scatter. Try shining the beam through a small aperture in a dark room. At lower powers, the scatter might still be there, but not noticeable next to the main dot.

This forum is very anti-pot-modding. It is like they all feel the disturbance in the force when a diode dies... :D

i say knock yourself out, lern something. Kill a diode, order a new module and learn how to start building and repairing. Why all the hatred for pot-modding?

Jerry, I would agree with you if we were talking about something besides a chinese niche market using elcheapo parts. My guess is that they try to build with a very small tolerance so their failureratee won't be too high, but there is probably some room for turning them up. And who knows, maybe one in ten can take a significant increase.

If not, then poof... back to the drawing board.

That's not so bad.
