Hello, as you can see, this is my first post. Now, I am looking to buy a cheap green laser, so natrally, after reading this forum for a while, decided that I want to buy from DX. I know what to expect from them, low quality and such, but heres the problem: My dad thinks that since they are located in China that they will take my money and not send the product, he also says that if they do, it will be seized at the border. (I'm in the US) My mom says that ALL types of radiation cause cancer, including laser radiation, so she doesn't want me to buy it. (She's a nurse so.. yeah) I know all about the safety and stuff and will use common sense when using it. I want to get the Romesin L-A030 Mini green laser, but if I cannot convince my father to let me buy from DX I may be willing to buy from KD, I am not sure which laser to buy from there but have heard good things about the "copper" 50mW laser. I am using my own money BTW and I think I deserve to spend it how I want to. Please help convince my parents!

1. Your dad is wrong... i have bought many things from DX and have always gotten the item!
2. It will not be seized at the border, i'm in the US, and customs don't check packages. Just make sure to pick free shipping ;)
3. Your mom is very wrong, light radiation does not cause cancer unless it is in the UV spectrum. Lasers are used to remove tumors and do surgery! Lasers emit radiation in the form of light, they do not emit nuclear, gamma, microwave, x-ray, radio waves, or any other radiation that alters your genes. It behaves with the body just like a regular flashlight.
4. Convince your parents that you are responsible enough and promise them that you will never shine it at people, planes, animals, etc.
5. Ask them if you ever did anything stupid with a dangerous item? Tell them you will treat your laser how you would treat a gun.

Good Luck!

Glad to see you finally were able to register!

A laser does emit light radiation, it doesn't cause cancer though. If all radiation caused cancer you would get cancer every time you turned on a light bulb or watched TV. My mom is a nurse too and she trusts me with my lasers because she knows I use them safely and responsibly. All light is radiation, not just light from a laser. Laser light is special because it is a single color (plus some more detailed stuff but theres no need to get into that here. ;) )

I own lasers from DX and so does nearly every member on here, and we have all gotten our lasers just fine in the US.

I'll be happy to answer any questions your parents have, just post their questions and beliefs about lasers in this thread and we'll all try to give you answers.

THANK YOU. My dad Loled when he read that. :D (Spyderz)  I don't have a Paypal account so I'm going to make one... I would +1 rep you but I can't.  :p EDIT: Maven: I am very responsible, even my parents agree with me there.  ;D

There, I repped on your behalf LRMNmeyer, I thought it was a good post too :)

I still lol when people think lasers will give you cancer. I mean, come on, it's just light. You have more chance of getting cancer from a flashlight, lol

My hands started shaking in anger when my dad said lasers can give you cancer :p

Haha, not really though... I told him he was wrong and gave him an hour long lecture... ;D

My dad used to think when I pointed my weak keychain pointer at my hand that I would get cancer... :p Over time he eventually started to believe me that that laser was harmless to my skin.

LRMNmeyer- Try to order the laser from DX as soon as you can because shipping from DX will take a while and it isn't fun waiting for something in the mail. ;D

Hi.

Just for precautionary purposes...

... I think the most important thing is IR FILTERS; most DX and other cheap lasers don't have them.

You WILL seriously risk damage to your vision if you play around with anything over 10mW that hasn't got an IR filter.

You can get around it by buying a cheap laser, and fitting a filter afterwards.

The easiest way to get one is to get an un-needed, broken, or dirt-cheap digi-camera, or web camera, take it apart, and just behind the lens you'll find a small square piece of glass with a red tint to it.

That's the IR filter.

Stick this behind the small hole your beam comes out of, with the red tinted side facing the laser source because it scratches very easily and you're done.

You can check the before and after by looking through a pair of safety glasses and seeing the brightness of the IR spot reduce noticeably.

Dragon lasers have a new range of REALLY WELL PRICED glasses now...

The IR from DX lasers is basically harmless. The IR stays in the beam of green so the only real exposure to IR you could get is if you shined it in your eye, and then you have a little more to worry about that some IR leakage because the green will do much more damage. Besides, most of the DX pointers are filtered anyway.

I always though IR diverges rather quickly from an unfiltered dpss laser? Anyway I wouldn't be comfortable with a high powered green, let's say 200mW, without an IR filter. And since goggles for green usually do not protect against IR, a bad reflection or direct hit from an unfiltered green at close range could still hurt your eyes despite wearing those goggles. Or am I mistaken? :)

Some unfiltered greenies have IR that diverges like a flashlight, but it seems the NewWish pointers (unfiltered) have a pretty well collimated IR beam. The IR from one of my unfiltered NewWish pointers diverges at about 2.5mRad.

I wouldn't be comfortable with an unfiltered 200mW greenie either, that uses a big pump diode so the escaping IR will be higher and could become a danger. But for the lower powered stuff DX sells the leaking IR is pretty minimal.

either way the amount of IR coming out is negligible compared to the green. If it is diverging quickly, then its not in a beam, and whatever light is actually entering your eye is such a tiny fraction of the total amount of IR that its harmless. People are so freaked about lasers with no IR filters. The reason IR filters because such an issue is because we were worried about accurate POWER readings, and somehow that message got skewed into one about safety. YES there is a safety issues with lasers that ONLY put out IR, because you have no idea where its going or what it's reflecting off of. But as far as green lasers go, the IR is much less of a safety issue than the green regardless of how it diverges.

There is nearly always a strong collimated IR component that exits these lasers even if a bit of it diverges. The danger is if you are looking at the dot/beam or whatever using goggles, because otherwise the laser light will be so much more intense and dangerous anyway.

If you need a simpler explanation as to why it is UV that causes the cancer, not visible light: tell them about how sunblock is designed to block UVA and UVB radiation, and that visible lasers, especially green and red, are in the visible spectrum. You might crisp your skin, but you won't get cancer.
