Hello everyone. This is my first post on this site
I'm totally new with lasers and I'm still trying to figure out things . I bought This green laser from ebay. I am waiting for delivery and meanwhile doing some research on internet. The dealer claims this laser as 100mW power and with adjusttable focus. But as far as I understand, a 100mW laser would cost higher. I am not sure what will be the actual output. The sticker on the laser shows MAX OUTPUT POWER<100mW, not sure what this means.

I found similar laser on another website(This link). Here it shows as 5mW. Now I am confused what is the actual output of this laser.

I have bought this laser for astronomical purpose. Will it be sufficient for star pointing and just for fun burning plastic bags/baloons?

Thanks.
Vinay

I can't check the Ebay links from here (work) but it'll probably be very underspec.

If you want an up to spec laser you should order from one of the renowned sites (check the companies subforum)

For your first link (the one you have bought) I doubt it's really 100mW. I would guess about 20-45mW, which would be able to cause permanent eye damage but not much fun for burning. You barely will be able to light a match or pop balloons.

I suggest you have a look into LZGN - 532nm 100mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer. Lazerer is a reputable company around here and are known to be on spec. It does cost a bit more money though, and shipping might be slow. Let us know if you get the laser you just bought and whether you like it or not.

Cheers!

The sticker on the laser shows MAX OUTPUT POWER<100mW.
This means the same as:
MAX OUTPUT POWER<100,000,000,000KW

Yes, and it means the same as <power of the Sun

So you are "guaranteed" that your laser will be UNDER 100mW. That also means it can be 0mW.

The Laser in the 1st link states 50mW at the bottom of the
page. That is more in line with what you may get.

The 2nd Link supplier needs to label his sale as 5mW to be
able to sell them. They are no doubt higher than 5mW.

That being said............

Hi Guys,

Thanks for replies, I received the laser just now. I dunno how much is actual output but the beam is visible inside the house and not in broad daylight. Also, the dot I see on trees/buildings is quite bigger then I expected, I thought it would be a pinpoint dot. In a dark room the dot and beam seems to be perfect. It is mentioned in the ebay that this laser is with adjustable focus but there are only 2 movable parts in the laser. One is to remove the battery and another one to open the laser module. I cant see any change in dot/focus by moving either parts.

Is there any way I can figure out how much actual output is and also about the focusing part?

All Lasers have divergence... the farther from the Laser
the larger the Beam Profile (Dot). Some lasers have more
divergence than others.

Yes... the only accurate way to measure the output power
of your Laser is with a Laser Power Meter.

You can buy one professionally made and calibrated or you
can make one yourself similar to one of these but an accurate
calibration will still be an issue.

Hi,

Thanks for explaining about the output power. What do you think about adjustable focus part? When I bought the laser, I assumed I would be able to adjust focus(Dealer also mentioned that laser is adjustable to focus) but as I mentioned in the earlier post, there are only 2 movable parts and I cant change focus with either of this. (I was hoping for adjustable focus so I could have some fun with balloons/matchsticks)

Also, I am having one more concern now. After trying out a while, the beam started becoming dim. I recharged the battery until the charger indicator turned green. Now whenever I start the laser, beam(and dot) would be bright for a split second and then would fade away turning dim again(Not so much dim but clearly noticeable) :( I was assured that battery would be decent quality. Could it be just a battery or some other issue?

Thanks
