Well let me start by saying hey. I'm new to register but have been lurking for awhile.
Now onto lasers. I have a buddy who gets green 5mw lasers from china or something. I recently had a driver go out ( was my fault trying to find a adjustment pot that wasn't there) so I tore the pen case off the diode and thought I'd learn on this one. I was thinking about building a lm317 driver for it. But the LD has a driver soldered on the leads coming out of the LD so if I take the driver off how would I find + and - of the Ld or does that matter ? Would the LM317 driver work with this LD? I have no way of posting pics. But I assume it's a pretty common diode seeing as it has been in all my green pen lasers .

Now I also have a LD with a driver attached that's noticeably bigger. The driver board is bigger and the brass case that holds the diode but it's the same diameter as the pen laser I have. My buddy gave it to me as a part. I believe it to be a higher power green LD. But the driver has no leads or wires coming off it and I can't figure out how to wire it. Maybe the drivers burnt on it. So my question here is. Is the lm317 driver pretty universal as far as 5mw to 1w? Or is there another driver I should be thinking bout.
Both Lds have lenses and everything on them from the factory. The only thing missing is a case right now.
I know not having pics makes it hard to ask for a Id on these parts. So I won't.
