Curious to know if anyone has experimented with taking the driver off a green module. I've been wondering what voltage output the driver on the 10mW green modules on modwerx are putting out, and what current range it can be adjusted to. Mostly wondering along the lines of if one could be set to power a diode other then the IR one, making it a nice cheap boost driver. I bought a 100mW one from modwerx a while back, and modified a dorcy to hold it, but I am not 100% certain it has a pot, and it would be a real pain to take it apart to check.

Current is adjustable from nearly zero to more than 1Amp. Be careful while adjusting the pot as it's quite sensitive. (it has a pot)
I have successfully used such driver to power red LD (tried up to 450mA). You'll need a bit more input voltage: >3,6V (red LDs have higher voltage drop). If you are going to use it for this, be careful with the polarity of the diode. Red diodes have different polarity than IR diodes. One member already burned his diode this way ...
Nobody has tried using this driver to power a blu-ray diode so far, I think.

edit: My post is about the driver from a 100mW module, which I got from DX, but it has the same driver. 10mW modules might use a driver with different current range, say 0-500mA or something similar.
I forgot to mention this driver is not boost type, it's linear driver. So you always need higher voltage at the input than at the output.

The voltage output will be too low for red or violet diodes. Also, 808nm diodes are case positive, while red diodes are case negative. You are better off using a Flex or Rkcstr.

As I said, at least 3,6V to the driver are needed to power a red diode instead the 2,7V needed if you are powering an IR LD. Obviously it's not going to work at 3V (which is the rated voltage of the green module).

Ah well. I didn't realize an IR diode had a low voltage req. I assumed if it's running off 3v that it had to boost the current, (as even red diodes need more voltage then that) my mistake. Well, worth asking about either way :D thanks for your replys
