Reading all the controversy about these NewWish pointers, i thought i would take one completely apart, to see exactly what's what. I was helped a little by one of the batch i bought not being fixed together at the front properly, so the assembly just slid apart!

Here's one of them in its case.
Purchased these on 4/6/08 from Hong Kong (where else!!!).

Basically the parts are all threaded, and the various parts look like this, from left to right: End cap, Collimator, Crystal set, and bare IR diode/driver board.

Top side of driver board.

..and the other side. Note the position for the pot (marked RE1) is bridged with a resistor instead.

View of the bare IR diode, surprised to see its not cased!

I wouldn't recommend dismantling this far unless you have to, it was a right pain to get that lot realigned!! The use of hot melt by the factory helped, all i had to do was re-melt it to glue the crystal housing back in place (this has to be spot on rotationally, you're firing the diode into a crystal with about a 1.5mm end, and it's offset!).

As the complete assembly pulled apart easily, i'm guessing whatever held it in wasn't there on this one, whether it was a shim or not i don't know. Bit of glue on one side maybe, not all the way round though as electrical contact is relied upon to carry the +ve current to the diode case (which i always thought was the cathode, or at least it was on the dvd diode i played around with. So don't quite know how they get round that!).
Anyway, one thing i noticed straight away- where's the IR filter? All i saw from the diode to the outside world was crystals, mirror/lens, and collimator. No IR filter as far as i can see!

One important thing i must stress is, be careful of the -ve battery spring, make sure the piece of foam isn't too low down, a friend of mine screwed it together and the spring must have leant sideways and bridged the neg straight to the case. Dead short across batteries = lots and lots of heat!!
Also i didn't see anything supporting the driver board to stop it bending when pressing the button, so i stuck a piece of foam down between the back of the driver board and the case to support it.

Hope this helps answer a few questions!

Following up on this, i have actually now dismantled my old one for a project i'm doing, and it appears this is an original NewWish, making the above pointer a copy possibly?

Here you can see this one looks a bit better made, the sections butting up nicely to each other. This one has the pot fitted too.

On the other side we see the two wires going into the optics, i'm assuming this connects to a photodiode and angled IR filter setup, i haven't actually dismantled that part, not wanting to upset alignments.

Also on the rear face of the brass collar around the diode is engraved the word NewWish, and also their web address, so i imagine this is a genuine one.

Me ebay 50mw lasers,Is 100% identical to your first laser picture. there making these lasers look better by making the parts look chrome like the button and the clip and the head.

So what's the difference between the first laser and the second?

Were they both advertised as NewWish? Or is only the second one NewWish? Did you get either of them from DX? The one you got from DX... did it have the wires leading to what you thought was an IR filter?

@wesdaman: Yes that's right, also there's nothing engraved on the pen clip, whereas on the genuine newwish it says "laser pointer".

@potato: Which case? The actual laser housing, or the grey gift box?

@xombie: The second one must be newwish, as their name and web address is engraved on the collar around the diode. I bought it a year ago from a fleabay user in UK. The one in my first post is one of five i got off a chinese user last week, which i assumed to be newwish. Evidently not! (looks like no IR filter for a start)

@all: I wonder, do these pointers perhaps all use a diode suited for say the 100mW model for example, and they just turn it down for the lower power pointers in the range? Its possible i suppose, would save the mfrs money buyin all the same diode?

Yes Diachi, looks identical. If you look on there at the photos some guy has uploaded, you'll see he's split the crystal section, you can see the angled IR filter etc in there.

Strange though, if you look on newwish website, all the green pointers on there are 5mW. And mine was 50 !

Has anybody successfully dismantled one of the more typical pen lasers, where the module seems to be glued into the barrel? I've got a DX20 I want to disassemble, but I hate to have to slice up the barrel with a cutting wheel, for fear of damaging something.

Not sure if i know which one you mean. Could you be a bit more specific of "typical" ? A picture perhaps?

I love that glimmer on the first picture of the pen. It looks so brand new... and then it goes to the chopping block.
