Green laser pointer broken?

So i just received my laser i bought on Ebay.

But when i charged the battery (16340) and installed it in the laser it quickly showed a green point but then instant the red IR thingy. (Don't worry i didn't put my eye on it) After a couple of times trying it started to get very hot and smoke. It burned the circuit.

How was this possible?

Is it the battery his fault?
Or the circuit on the laser?
Or me buying lasers from ebay?

Any fix? Help please.

It looks like you got a bad example. It happens, ask for a refund or a replacement.
 
If they dont replace it, just place a 10-Ohm Resistor from Diode's -ve to spring contact.. You'll override the pcb connections and you're direct driving the diode with limiting the current from the battery.. This setup MAY kill your diode much faster as soon as a spike is generated it'll hit the diode.. For that you'll have to also add a 16v 10uF capacitor.. and keep the battery fully charged at all times..

I'll ask for a replace or refund... If the don't i just throw it away i guess. I'm not that techy with resistors and diodes etc.. :(
 
They will replace it with a new one.
How can i prevent this from happening again?

The seller says: "I guessed you used wrong battery or wrong direction"

Should i buy a new battery?

Did you measure the voltage of the battery ? If the voltage is in range then no need to change it. The charged battery should be around 4.1V

The battery negative should be on the spring. Green lasers are mostly case positive.

I just measured the voltage... It was 7.1 something, then it dropped fast to 3.x 2.x When i touched it battery was VERY hot.

I think the battery killed the laser
 
OMG !:eek: You have measured the CURRENT and not the VOLTAGE.
The readings were in Amps. Try it again and now Voltage measurement.

Btw the battery won't get hot if you measure the voltage.
 
I dont think its the battery cause i have the exact same laser... its made by oxlasers witch is a great company.... and the battery is the same and every thing... but i think you had a resistor break off or what ever those heat reducers are called. sorry im a little late... just dont ever drop it cause i did and the focus lens broke from the focusing and no it just moves around in the top of the laser
