Hello,
Just ordered this guy:
LZCB - 532nm 100mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer
for myself (mostly for stars pointing)

And I'd like to buy a laser for my son (7 yrs old).

I want green laser that points FAR and you also can SEE the beam in the dark, but I want it to be safe to point (without goggles)
I also want inexpensive one (up to 30$)

Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Michael

7 is a bit young I got my first Proper laser at 13.
And with what you are saying about a laser that points far and being able to see the beam in the dark Would still cause eye damage especially when handled by a 7 year old.

Maybe buy him one of those cheap red lasers first and see if he is responsible with it and anyway he would probably be really happy with just that :)

I know i loved my first cheapy red laser :D Everyone did :na:

It is important to understand that a non filtered <5mW 523nm
(green) Laser will be dangerous without appropriate Laser Safety
Goggles/Glasses due to the IR leakage. Most cheap <5mW Green
Lasers are way overspec and have no IR filters.

I would suggest you get your 7 year old son a guaranteed
<5mW red Laser to use without Laser Safety Goggles/Glasses
until he can show a respect for this (non-toy) Laser and
understands the dangers of using it.

Then he can migrate to a more powerful 532nm Laser..

Lasers are not toys and if used improperly they will cause
harm...

maybe 5mw green because you can see the beam at night and it is eye safe ;)

PLEASE dont give out bad advice concerning eye safety of 7 yr olds.
There is in reality no such thing as a safe green laser for kiddos to use as a toy.

To the OP.^^^
Stick to the small red lasers that use button batteries.
When he can FULLY understand all the dangers involved with lasers you might get him a green.

You also need to take into consideration the fact that it is impossible to watch your son 24/7 unless you keep the green locked up and only allow him to use(note I did not use the word 'play') the laser with your direct non-stop supervision. Eye damage is not easy to detect. It can happen very fast and last a lifetime. Erring on the side of safety is recommended.

I assume he has friends and even tho you may have instructed your son completely you must take into consideration what his friends could do with it.

Lastly taking a laser of any kind to school these days is treated just like bringing a knife or bb gun to class.

good luck

A 5mw green can be much more and NOT eye safe. No laser is. 5mw is just the the threshold for the human eye to respond and blink. I have metered "5mw" lasers that were over 50mw!!!

Get your kid a 1mw red pointer, anything more powerful shouldn't be used by anyone under 12 (and mature).

Wait, I just realized exactly how young 7 is-- it's most likely a very bad idea to give even a 1mw to anyone under 10.

If you must get he/she one, then PLEASE don't get something more powerful than a 1mw red.

well 7yr is a very interesting age.
no i would not let just any 7yr old play with a 5mw laser same with a bb gun.
But you supervise them and give them the right safety equipment things can be much safer.
Teaching safety and the importance of proper safety equipment should be started early.
That way if they ever find a gun or laser they know the importance and severity of the item and know its more than a toy and how to handle it so no one can get hurt.
Kids are curious and unless taught right and what to do when they find something dangerous bad things WILL happen.
Is 7 to young maybe then again i know adults who are over 50 i would not let even near anything sharper than a butter knife.
Teaching is the number 1 goal.

Holy cow...

Just have your son watch Star Wars. Plenty of lasers on there that don't endanger innocent bystanders.

I also would not give a child under 10 years any laser, even a 1mW one. You can´t imagine what crazy ideas children might have. Maybe a hit with a 1mW laser is causing a soo cool effect (temporal blindness is meant) that they will shine it for a longer period into their eyes to see what happens.

However. Let you tell something frome someone who has two blind spots in his right eye. Even if your son is responsible and knows the risks and how to treat a laser. His friends are NOT.

The two blind spots in my right eye were not caused by myself or careness but my 30 years old sister who behaved like a child when she came into the room and saw the laser in my hand. She took it like crazy out of my hand and shined directly into my face. I had the googles already off and the beam hit my eye two times for a fraction of a secound.

Fortunally the two blind spots are really small and almost not noticable after more than a half year. Therefore for me dealing with lasers is like driving a car. You not just have to care about yourself but also about what others might do. You for sure wouldn´t let your 7 years old son drive your car. Would you?
