Evening friends. I was wondering if some kind soul or maybe just a couple people with knowledge and some extra time on their hands could offer their opinions on a few lasers I have been considering. I've been doing research trying to decide which one to buy for a couple weeks now, and I've gotten to the point where I just want one now! I'm afraid I might be caught up in my own hype and consequently buy a laser that I don't like...

If someone could tell me the reasons for the price difference between these lasers it would really help me to understand more clearly what I'm purchasing. The prices are fairly similar, and I know wattages affect price considerably, but I've seen lasers with a less powerful wattage that cost more than more powerful ones... That I do not understand. I'm looking to buy something between 100-200mW range, depending on what you kind folk can tell me about these lasers...

1. Green Laser Pointer- Warnlaser.com
I'm looking at the 120mW model. Looks great, and I think it would suit me perfectly.

2. Green Laser Pointer- Warnlaser.com
Then I saw this one... Looking at the 100mW model. It is the same price as the one above, but for a smaller power output. Why do you suppose this is?

Some of them will not send how power pointers to the US. Rayfoss does ship to the US.

Thanks k1k, yes I was really dissapointed to learn they didn't ship stateside... But after doing a bit more digging I found out that lots of people were receiving lasers that were underspec, and that the shipping took forever... Although, I'm still not clear on the price difference between those two lasers.

hey audio,
one of them is in a pen style host, while the other is in a bigger host.
the bigger usually offers better heat dissipation (heat sinking), and is often more durable.

however, the bigger, more flashlight-like lasers usually take less common batteries (eg. CR2, CR123), and are less portable.

my personal preference has always been in favour of the bigger flashlight lasers, unless we are talking about <10mW pointers

Thanks primary! I definitely agree with you on the laser size, for some reason the larger lasers seem much more appealing to me. With respect to the smaller laser I posted, do you think heat would be a big issue during operation?

I think it would depend on your usage, or "duty cycle".

for a ~100mW laser, quite some heat will be produced, so probably nothing more than 1 minute continuous on, followed by some cool down time.
I would imagine a much shorter run time for the pen style pointers.

that is, if you won't be leaving the laser on for more than 20 seconds on at a time, I wouldn't sweat too much about it.

I have heard only bad things about Warnlaser. If you really want to spend 100$++ extra for an IR filter, go to dragonlasers.com or another reputable seller. I would go with Rayfoss though, you can get 200mW for the price of Warnlaser 50.

Grix, way ahead of you... I asked around a bit and everyone told me warnlaser was crap. I'm glad I didn't go through with it. I've instead decided to go with opto. I'm so excited I can barely stand it! I'm getting the 150mW...

I purchased this exact laser about a month ago.
YOU ARE GOING TO LOVE IT!

If you've never seen a true 150mW greenie before, you are in for one pleasant surprise.....even more so when the sun goes down.... :eg:

Optotronics is one of the best companies in America when it comes to customer service. I've only purchased two lasers from them (150mw+ and an RPL-425), and Jack has been superb on both occasions and highly accommodative with my questions. He'll bend over backwards to make sure you are a happy customer....

Yup....I'm a Jack-fan.

I'm sure you would be too, if you've had the pleasure to deal with him directly.

Anyhow, enjoy your laser and let us know what you think of it.
