Hey guys, I was just wondering if anyone else has noticed this before when pointing at certain objects.

I got a 20mw green laser pointer a few weeks ago and noticed that when I shine it at this red fake gemstone thing the stone lights up red. Now as far as I'm aware there is no way to get red light from a green laser like that unless the stone is fluorescing which I didn't know green laser pointers did to anything. I've tried it on a few different objects since and have only come across one other example. And that is Post-It notes. When shining the laser light at a pink post it the dot appears orange.

So the point of this post is two-fold, does anyone know any other examples of this happening (perhaps ones we could try) and secondly, does anyone know any more of the technical/scientific reasons for this and what chemical it is likely that the green light is interacting with.

Yes these items are fluorescent and the intense green light does make many things fluoresce, try alcoholic beverages, tequila and Jack Daniels and most fabrics died bright red as well as most dayglow colors of paper plastic and cloth.

Cool, I'll have to try it on lots of alcohols, sounds like a cool party trick. Is that a real ruby you have fluorescing? I ask because I have no idea what the gem I have is.

Also if anyone finds anything that fluoresces any colours other than orange include the colours in the post.

blurays are more amazing at flourescence ;) but perhaps try taking water in a glass jar and putting the ink from a highlighter in it. (pink highlighter) when the laser shines through, u should see a different color beam

Sure things glow different colors, Yellow frequently in tea and alcohol, green in amber and yellow/ green for pine tree sap.  Real rubies often turn bright red, and the man made ones even brighter and all man made rubies I've seen glow.  There are some sapphires that glow purple or orange, but remember, if it glows green, it's hard to tell, and it can't glow blue or purple, not excited with green laser, fluorescing is always a longer or equal wavelength, never shorter, that would be a step up in energy level, more energy from nowhere, does not happen.

Oh yeah, try some purple plastic, some I found glows yellow!

After reading this I tried out myself.. a 50mW greenie through tequila makes a yellow beam inside! Looks fantastic!
I also noticed that yellow things (especially shiny print on cardboard and yellow plastic) light up to an extreme extent with yellow light when you shine a blu-ray on it.. my 175mW produces a blinding yellow light when it hits a small piece of yellow plastic and the whole room is lit up! When I tested the blu-ray through the tequila it gave a funny white beam, with a slight tint of greyish green. So many things I have to explore now..

I have noticed too, with green lasers, that very thick, strong infrared blocking lenses (usually on each side of the viewfinder from older film cameras almost completely block the entire laser output. If you put it over the laser and shine it and look right into it, you have to move it around to even start to see a hint of red and green. It's still very hard to see.
