Dear LaserPointerForum members,

My first post on LPF:)

I am by all measures and standards new to this. And have only built one laser
from JayRob (DIY Green Kit), with a 200mw Green Laser Module from Dealextreme.

The laser was great for the past 6 month or so but a few days ago is started to shine with a central beam surrounded by 1000's of little specks all around which becamse larger the further I shone the laser.

Does anybody know what has caused or is causing this and what (if anything) I can do to rectify this?

I've attached some photos. They are not super clear but hopefully the give an indication of what I mean.

Kind Regards

Well to me it seems that the lense is dirty but that module has more then 1 lense.
Did you mess with it ? open it ? drop it ? try to think what you did with it
( ending with a oops...)

From a distance, what does the "texture" of the "supernova" look like? Mine it looks like a foam of soap bubbles, how all the borders meet and become straight lines, instead of the normal round outsides. It's hard to explain, and most people here just write it off as a dirty lens, but I think it's more than that. Not saying it's fixable, but I'm just curious what it is too. Took pics, but they're on a different phone.

Edit:

can you take better pictures?
Put a piece of paper up, with a hole punched out. Set laser up so dot goes through hole and scattered light hits paper from the front only. I also had luck by blocking the beam only, out of view, using a popsickle stick. Also, farther away, the larger the "texture" will appear. Your dot should still be TEM00 round dot, though.

Hi guys, thanks for the responses. I was just about to attempt taking better pictures but thought I'd give cleaning both sides of the lense with my normal glasses cleaner spray and a microfibre cloth stretched over an ear cleaning bud and it worked. The beam is back on the straight and narrow :p

To Weeba2kv:
Haha I remember now what my "oops" moment was. I bought some dark headed matches from dealextreme and it didn't light until I got really close with the laser. When it did light however it may have had some moisture or something in it because it kind of exploded on the end of the match stick and then went out instantly hence probably blowing ash on to the laser lens.

Cheers for the help guys,
Kind Regards.

Included a photo of beam correct again (it is a day shot so beam not very visible).

Would a polyester "lint free" rag have the same effect?
And are there any solvents/solutions that i should avoid using when trying to clean any laser lens? My laser is doing the same thing.

i cant take it out of the case without all this stupid, powdery Afghanistan sand getting into everything

Be careful, that sand can scratch your lens and scratches are almost impossible to get out..
Try just using a can of compressed air (computer cleaner) and blow the dust out.
