Bad news, folks. It looks like the diode inside my X175 has misaligned itself. I have no idea how, as this thing hasn't been dropped or experienced shocks, but the beam itself is off-center, and the front cap is slightly obscuring the beam, which is causing distortions. I can clearly see the beam is off-center when I take the cap off. It's not mode shifting or anything -- the beam still retains its perfect TEM00 state.

I've e-mailed NOVAlasers to see if I can get this thing fixed or replaced. I'll post more as soon as I get a reply from them.

I've gotten very attached to this thing over the 12 days, too... :'(

Dang that sucks. It seems like there's been a lot of problems with the X-series lately. Mine is being repaired right now.
What is the problem with yours?

Mine would drop below match lighting power after 40 seconds, and would have to cool for quite a while to get the power back. In the meantime though, im looking at buying this: http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.11018
This is not a failure. It can be the batteries!
Some batteries cannot hold the current for a long time. it drops dramatically

Trust me, i tried everything, eneloops are proven to hold current for a long time and thats what i was using. Even lithiums had the same effect. I would also change the batteries immediately and it would drop almost instantly. I know this is not how the laser is supposed to act. A 125mW laser should not drop below 125mW over the course of the duty cycle right? And i mean it would drop really low, like lower than 80mW. It looked about the same as my dx50.

You are correct. The Nova does have a decent driver that keeps current constant..I tried lithiums, nimh and alkaline batteries and the output of my X105 was the same over the 90 second duty cycle. I hope you get it back soon.. :)

Why not build your own? The latest one I have built starts out at 156mW and after 20 minutes it is stable at 165mW. No TEC unit, No duty cycle. It is made to work in constant use. 4 hours of run time befor recharging the lithium battery pack. T-6 ali case as well. Here  is a pic.......

Nice work. But we are interested in more portable units. You cannot put this in your pocket!
And to build somthing like that needs too much machinary and cyrstals and lenses and so. ::)

does the unit project a true tem00 beam

Aren't these guaranteed to produce TEM00 only?

Is it possible to have them repaired, if they start mode hopping after the warranty expires? How much does that usually cost?
