Got a 532nm 5MW green laserpen and I think it is not working correctly

First of, I'm sorry if this forum is not a place to ask what I am asking below. I have googled and could not find any other forum where there are people who have knowledge about lasers.

Hi so I recently got a 532nm 5MW green laserpen (to start with).

Bought it from some Dutch webshop. It worked great, very bright, visible beam outside and could shine as far as I could see. However it broke within 10 minutes.

I've sent it back and got a new one today.

When I used this one (the new one) it would be bright for 0,5 seconds and than get weak to the point of some 1 dollar toy laser. No visible beam anymore, just a weak green dot on whatever I point it at.

When this happens and I just keep it one for like 10 seconds it gets bright again and stays that way for as long as I've tried (I held it for like 1 min, stayed bright). Or some times when I spam the button it will stay bright for longer.

The laser that I got first didn't do this untill it broke.

I have brandnew duracel batteries in it.

What could be the problem here, and how can I fix it? I really can't be arsed sending it back a 2nd time.

This is the laser I got: Groene laserpen 5mW

I know this thing is probably cheap and crap but the first one I got worked great and was always bright (until it broke). I just wanted to buy a laser to have some fun and shine at things.

Hate to inform you but....

You bought a typical cheap Chinese green pen which outputs a lot of IR.

Don't expect it to work for a long time and/or correctly :(

Hey mate, thanks for your answer, what do you mean with IR?

Hate to inform you too but that doesn't help the OP's problem. You seem to be obsessed with IR output of these cheap pointers when I'm seeing most of your recent posts.

Brize,

Read about "DPSS" lasers. These things are very temperature dependent. they have crystals inside that if not properly aligned won't put out decent power or be stable. Your first one was probably overdriven or was luckily aligned properly so it puts out enough green even at startup. The second one has a not so optimally aligned crystal or poorer quality ones that won't work until a certain temperature is reached which explains a dim output that then later gets brighter as it warms up.

Thanks for your answer.

So will it get better eventually? I just got it from the mail, it has been lying in the cold hallway all day.

Though I kept it in my pocket for about 30 mins now and it still performs unstable. Sometimes it is very bright with a good visible beam and then suddenly it gets weak again. Thought when it it weak now it is even weaker then i described in the OP...

I will try to make some pictures.

Probably not. It only gets bright at a certain temperature, good battery voltage, position of the moon, stars and your tongue angle.

Seriously though, with these cheap green laser pens (which are all DPSS except for the new ones which are direct diode but aren't cheap) it's a crap shoot if you get a good one or not. Get a red or violet which are direct diode lasers which are more stable output wise. If you really want a stable green, get one of those premium green DPSS pens from laserglow or other good sellers which have automatic power control (APC) but they definitely won't be cheap or get the newer ones that are direct diode green lasers which also won't be cheap but will produce its output even in very cold or hot climates.

No it will not :cryyy:

These lasers will vary on the output being emitted depending on the batteries(at least mine worked like that).

If I were you, I would save some money and purchase a true 5mW from a reliable seller

Cheap DPSSs are very tempermental. I had one that you had to shake to make it work properly, and another one that i had to let warm up.

In my opinion, you should save up and get a really good pointer from a place like laserbtb.

LP 515nm 532nm 1-150

anything from 10mw up is a good choice for you.

Trust me, the extra money is worth it!

Ah ok, just looks like I bought cheap shit I guess.

It just worked perfectly all the time for like 15 minutes. The I put it back down and tried it again after 5 min and the same shit happened again.

Attached some images.

Thanks guys, I will look into buying a decent laser then.

Looks like what they say is really true: you get what you pay for...

Is there any laser that is affordable that is bright and where you can see the beam? I don't really care about the color.

Dude. Resize your godzilla size photos please.

The place that i linked is almost always overspec, but they are stable, reliable and built well.

Use 2x 1.5V cells in these pens not the rechargeable 1.2V ones.

Most of these cheap green DPSS pens are sensitive to cold temperatures. They mostly emitt Infrared when You can warm them up with a hair dryer or heater for a few seconds to see if the output of green light changes. If it does, you´re good and it is just to cold for powering them up at lower temperatures.

You can buy lasers these lasers a lot cheaper with worldwide free shipping. Just look around at Ebay, you can get them for EUR3-4,-

Last but not least, this is a good read to start with to see how DPSS lasers work: http://laserpointerforums.com/f45/some-faqs-about-green-dpss-lasers-30682.html#post494251

Im using 1,5's.

Have them on the heater now, on top of a blanket and will try it when its hotter.

Your FAQ was very helpful.

Looks like it got a little too hot. It didn't work at all for a few minutes.

After reading your faq, I aimed the laser at my phones camera and could see the red/purple light coming from the bottom of it. I did not look directly into it, I looked at it trough the screen of my phone.

Yeah putting it on top of a heater will probably cook it.

I see you've had a variety of responses - but the sum of it is cheap DPSS lasers essentially do this. My own ones do the same thing - you press button, it goes bright, then dims, and then gradually brightens again.

Were you in a cold room? This will make a great deal of difference. When I did stress tests on cheap DPSS lasers exactly like this, they took a full minute to "warm up" to a point where I could see the beam, and this was in a chilly room at about 10-14degrees C.

If you just want something to point around and have a bit of fun with you don't necessarily need a proper laser, but if you do buy one I wager a fair bet it'll get you interested in the hobby proper.
