Got a 532nm 5MW green laserpen and I think it is not working correctly

Yeah putting it on top of a heater will probably cook it.

I see you've had a variety of responses - but the sum of it is cheap DPSS lasers essentially do this. My own ones do the same thing - you press button, it goes bright, then dims, and then gradually brightens again.

Were you in a cold room? This will make a great deal of difference. When I did stress tests on cheap DPSS lasers exactly like this, they took a full minute to "warm up" to a point where I could see the beam, and this was in a chilly room at about 10-14degrees C.

If you just want something to point around and have a bit of fun with you don't necessarily need a proper laser, but if you do buy one I wager a fair bet it'll get you interested in the hobby proper.

Room is around 20C, It usually works now after it cooled of. I see I just bought a shit laser and will look into buying a proper one.

I ordered a "5mW" pen off ebay a few weeks ago, hoping it would be overspec- when i first turned it on, it was craptastically dim. But, I left it on for ~60 seconds, and boom- probably around 50mW. Visible beam during the day, nice bright spot. I have had it in my pocket for the last hour, keeping it warm, and it is even brighter now- you never know what you will get with these cheap chinese pens :)

If I may, some good sites for a good 5mW 532nm pointer are below

Laserglow Technologies

LP 515nm 532nm 1-150

Best of luck!

Looks good. Thinking of buying the one from the last site you linked like this:

515nm 5mW diode emitting directly (FDA)
10 MW pointer
IR filter

Would this be good to just mess around with for fun? Or should I spent a few euro more and buy the 50MW pointer instead of the 10MW? Is it going to be a big difference? In what way?

Or am I not understanding it correctly? "The 515nm 5mW diode emitting directly (FDA)" part is the actual laser right? And then you select which pointer you want attached to it?

Well the only differences between a 50mW and 10mW are as follows:
- 50mW will appear a little brighter and have a more visible beam
- 50mW will pop a balloon while 10mW wont(unfocused)
- 50mW is more dangerous

If you really want a *brighter* laser then by all means get the 50mW. It all depends on what you plan on doing.

So if I want the 50MW one from LP 515nm 532nm 1-150

I select 1 of "515nm 5mW diode emitting directly (FDA)" and the "pointer 50Mw" right?

Should I get IR filter too?

No.

You select the "50mW Pointer" not the first one, and buy the IR filter too. Trust me, for only 1 Euro you will be doing you're eyes a favor

Then what is the first thing mentioned on that product? "515nm 5mW diode emitting directly (FDA)".

Just curious.

The 515nm direct diode IS NOT DPSS so you don't have the IR issues. You won't need the IR filter for that.

Alright.

And just the 50mw pointer with IR filter then. This is a decent laser according to some posters here? Not Chinese crap that I got now?

But it is low power :p

Better getting a DPSS with an IR filter :D

@BRIZE: It is from china, but it is NOT cheaply made. It will ast a LONG time and it will be stable, promise. If it isnt you can get a new one...

These pens are really nice and will last a long time if you dont drop them or bang them around :)

Good luck

After building myself a direct green, I don't want to fiddle with those DPSS lasers in handhelds anymore especially in pens. The temperature dependence is a nuisance to me and most if not all of them has the beam coming out off to the side :p In a labby, maybe since it is in a more temperature controlled environment but not in a handheld.

Also is it bad for your eyes to look at the dot when you shine it on a wall or something? Or just only when you look directly into the laser?

Looking at the dot on a non reflective surface briefly is fine unless it's a really powerful laser. I try not to look at the dot of my 100mW too much and I certainly never do in close quarters.

that laser looks very poweful for being 5mw lol.. i wouldnt look even at the wall it looks brighter then my 40mw green i cant look many seconds before eyes start irritate.. need glasses for that.

The 515nm laser is a DIFFERENT laser! Expensive single mode diode and not DPSS. Do not buy for your purposes :)
