Actually it depends on the OD protection level (optical density). For example one of the pairs of glasses I use from survival laser is rated OD4 which means I cant see the beam and all you see is a very small dim dot when viewing a 1.5W 445 laser. Now the problem is that if you go with lower optical density you are also getting less protection. If you had glasses that allowed you to view the beam than they wouldn't be blocking enough light and in the case of an accidental hit in the eye they wouldn't protect you.
