My x85 has arrived.

Average output 98,3
peak 102,7

It can burn brown tipped matches within 2 seconds.
And the beam is visbile indoors (with daylight)
It can even reach the clouds at night

But after using it for a while and when the batterie power is starting to decease it get a green arc around the dot. (its not possible to burn anything when this happens)
If i wait a few minutes the arc is gone and it can burn again, is the normal?

can you post a pic of this - it may be mode hopping or just getting hot.

Congrats! I just had to pay $20 to send my x105 back to nova, I am very upset. It was performing very under power but they will replace it with a new unit.

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

I'm not seeing this green arc anymore right now.
It was about a quarter circle left of the dot with a radius of 4" , pointing at the wall with a distance of 6ft

It happened after burnig a few matches and cutting electrical tape.
But i never exceeded the duty cycle.
After letting it cool down a few minutes it was gone.
So i guess it was getting hot

But i'm not sure if this is normal when its getting hot.

The same thing happens to my X105 when the batteries are low. Try putting in a new pair of batteries and you should be fine. An X85 eats batteries fast so you will get that arc after 10-15 minutes of use on new batteries so if you aren't using them I would suggest recharables.

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

After using the laser for a while the green arc returned, but after replacing the batteries it was working normal again.

So i guess the batteries are running low on energy very quicky, however i can still light matches with it after approx 15 minutes of use.

I'm using duracell ultra which was recommended bij Nova.
But at this rate i need to buy some recharchables otherwise it will cost me a fortune to replace the batteries every 1 or 2 days.

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

Now i'm using Energizer 1000mah recharchables, but it seems the power is slightly lower.
Lighting matches takes 3 seconds (2 secs with fresh alkalines)

Furthermore with fresh alkaline i was able to light large (sharpied)BBQ matches.
But with the recharchables they will not burn.
I guess this is caused by the lower voltage.
The beam brightness seems to be the same.

Red and black balloons (or any other balloon treated with a black marker) are no problem at all and pop almost immediately with both battery types from a distance of 6 ft. i didn't test it at longer distances because at longer distances it's nearly impossible to keep the dot at a fixed point.

solar00 - words of advice :)

  • Try Lithium AA's...it will bring life to your lasre like you have NEVER seen !
  • Leave the laser stationary, and move the "victim" to the laser beam !  You will have GREATER success that way :)
  • you can use rubber bands, and a small and hard object to keep the button depressed :)

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

Thanks for the advice Senkat.
What kind of Lithium AAA's should i use?

I have found some Lithium Recharchables with 1100mah capacity on a local website (1,5 volt)
Or should i use disposable lithiums like the Energizer ultimate?

I would use teh disposable ones - they are very nice, and although expensive, will last a good long time I am sure !

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

What type of batteries are you currently using?

When power gets low, these lasers can sometimes change modes, and instead of creating a nice single dot, split up into multiple dots. Part of that split dot hitting the inside of the laser can cause those weird arcs. If the problem happens on fresh batteries, its an issue and you would probably want to return it for warranty. If replacing the batts solves it though, you just gotta get better batts and change them out more often. Perhaps use rechargeables if you want to use your laser at its peak over and over.

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

I've tried Duracell Ultra alkalines and Energizer 1000mah recharchables
But this arc never appeared with fresh batteries, only after using it for a while.

So i guess it's just the batteries.
I'll try to get some Lithiums

I use the e2 lithiums from Energizer... they work very nicely on all my lasers... in all sizes too :)

Worst comes to worst, you could just ship it back and get a replacement... :(

Re: Finally i have my first green laser,  X85

The mode hopping occurs only with nearly depleted batteries.
Furtermore the ambient temperature of the room where i did the test is just below 86F (Flat roof and the sun is shining)

I did some tests outside at night and downstairs (where it is much cooler) and everything went fine.

However one thing i don't understand is the warm-up time mentioned in some topics.
My laser burns en cuts immediately when turned on but when it heats up the power seems to decrease. (brightness stays the same)

After letting it cool down for 1 or 2 minutes the power is at its peak again.
Should warming it up make the laser stronger or is this only in a cold evironment.

I think it varies for each laser. My 100mW peaks in the first few seconds it is on, then it drops and slowly rises to a steady output in about twenty seconds. It works best in cooler conditions, and under performs in when it is +83 degrees F.

From the looks of this thread you all should go buy stock in Energizer before my laser arrives, lol. did the lithiums help Solar?
