Faulty laser?

I just received my 50mW green laser from ledshoppe
532nm Green Laser Pointer Pen 50mW US$22.99 only

But as soon as I turned it on, I noticed that it's not very powerful.
So I compared it to my 10$ 5mW green laser, and turns out my 5mW is much brighter.

Going to a dark room, I can easily see the beam for the 5mW, but the beam for 50mW is barely visible.

So I swapped the included batteries with some brand new ones.
It's better now, but my 5mW is still just a bit brighter than the 50mW.

Is this a faulty laser?
What should I do?

I already sent an email to ledshoppe but no response yet.

Just a guess but your "5mW" green is actually much more powerful then it's actually rated.

I guess my 5mW laser could be outputting more than 5mW.
I got it from Amazon.
Amazon.com: QQ-Tech® 5mW 5in1 High Power Green Laser Pointer Pen with 5 Star Constellation Projection Caps 5 Patterns of Stage light Infinite Pleasures: Electronics

I never owned a 50mW, but is it supposed to be this weak?
Reading other posts, the beam for a 50mW green is supposed to be very bright at night, and even visible in slightly lit areas.
But this 50mW is no where close to that.

The label on this says < 50mW, but is it possible that on the inside this has a 5mW module instead of 50mW?

I had the same reaction when I turned on my 100mw green for the first time, compared to my 5mw, it looks very similar. However, shine it in the ngiht sky, and you will see the difference, or your 5mw is just overspec (like the guy above mentioned)

Also MANY of the sellers grossly exaggerate (I won't say out right bull shit lie just to be nice) so you need to do research on the sellers.
A good guide line is if its high power and real cheap you probably are not getting the power rated.
The rating and what you paid is a close call. Just a 50mw module sells for $15-$20.
Could be lower power. Would not be unheard of.
Also depending on where are located and shipping to, return shipping could easily be more than the cost of the laser.

Thanks for the tip.

I waited a couple hours for night time and compared both outside. The beam for the 5mW is still brighter than the 50mW.
By the way, the 50mW can't pop ballons or burn anything either.

I guess I will contact ledshoppe to see how much it will cost to ship this back.

Can you guys give me any recommendations for a good, decently priced 50mW green laser(or something similar).

go to laserbtb.com aka skylasers and buy one of their portable or pointer lasers, they are said to be high quality and also a good reliable company

Thanks daawood123
That looks like a really good site.

I also read some really good reviews for BudgetGadgets.com.

I'm looking at two 100mW green lasers
HL 532nm 50-300 from skylasers for $100
and Focusable Green Beam Laser from budgetgadgets for $60.

Is the skylaser worth almost double the price?

Thanks in advance

yes, skylaser is defo worth it. Budgetgadgets doesnt have much of a rep here, and skylaser lasers are almost always overspec, and the power is guaranteed. If you want a mid quality laser, check out lazerer.com. I have dealt with them before and found they are a good company. Up to you really.

thanks again daawood123
You know better than me, so I'll go with skylasers.

How about power output
Is 100mW good?
They also have a 150mW for an extra $10.

I also already bought goggles, but will I be able to look at the beam without goggles if I'm outside pointing at stars?

yeah, that laser, its good, although I wasnt very impressed with it, it wouldnt light matches or pop balloons, even though the power certificate said 116mw, it is currently broken, as i pulled off the lens thingy, so i would say get the skylaser 150mw one, although it is more expensive, it is better quality and defo worth the extra $10 over the 100mw. Also, I would say you could look at the beam outdoors if your carefull, but not for close up burning etc.

I went to purchase the laser, it says I can add an IR filter for $1.57, should I do that?

yup. for the price I would say yes. It will make your laser that little bit safer, as most green laser goggles dont filter out IR, which can harm your eyes and its also invisible, so yh, just get that

Ok, I ordered the laser from skylaser, but I also want to get some rechargeable batteries.
I found some on ebay, but they are 3.7V instead of 3V. Is this fine for the laser?

They also have protected batteries, but they are 1/8 inch taller. Do I need this?

yes 3.7v is fine. If you actually used a multimeter (suggest you get one) then you would see that the actual voltage is around 4.2v, this is perfectly normal. Do not let your batteries go lower than 3v (2.75v the actualy mark, but I like to keep mine above 3v) before recharging, this will prevent them from getting messed up etc.

Any battery is fine for the moment, but I would suggest investing in some AW-IMR batteries. They are much better than all the ****fires, these will keep your laser running healthy for a long time, and will not drain as fast as ****fires.

EDIT: drop me a pm when you get your laser, I wanna make a purchase from skylaser soon iswell to expand my collection (probably a 20-50mw green) so I would like to know how they treated you, the laser quality etc
