So I understand that green lasers don't just shoot off the visible green beam, but a wider, stronger IR beam.

Why? Why is that part of a green laser?

I would think that a member that has been registered on
LPF since 2009 would know this...

If you do a little research on the Forum you will find that
to produce a DPSS 532nm Beam you need to pump some
special crystals with a much higher power 808nm IR Laser.

If the DPSS Laser is not properly IR filtered it will leak/spill
some of this invisible IR Power.

A high power 808nm laser diode is used to pump a laser crystal (Nd:YVO4 or Nd:YAG) which outputs at 1064nm. The 1064nm line is frequency doubled to create 532nm green. The problem is, the doubler and the vanadate are not 100% efficient, so you will always get a little IR leakage. Cheap lasers usually don't have an IR filter, higher quality lasers do.

Thank you Soren.

And to the first comment, I became a member in 2009 and the only time I come on here is to ask questions when buying a laser. I'm not an enthusiast and I don't come on here every day to chat lasers.

Right but the information is here in the forums, a couple minutes of searching(I.E. with the search function) and you might've found it.
