Hi all, new on here so please go easy :)

ok just bought this off ebay (after not reading the description properly)

cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=330285088070&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=014

now it's advertised as 240mw but i suspect there lieing, as further down in the description it says;

Maximum Output < 240mW
This item do set filter for safety, do not pop balloon or burn match!

any advice, as to removing the filter etc?

I most definitely is NOT 240mW. However, for only 17 Pounds, you probably got what you paid for.

All you need to do is read a bit of the Seller's feedback.......... :-?

"Neutral feedback rating - Laser power in NOT 240mW. Less than 50mW! Disappointed."

But if you think about it.... at less than 50mW it is still <240mW... as his specs show
in his description  :-?

Don't feel bad, many of us have had an ebay "oops" purchased for low $$$ in a weak moment. Your laser will likely work, but probably won't burn tape or pop balloons unless you get a lucky one. Power can vary from 10mW to 100+ mW between lasers from the same batch. These lasers are typically rushed through assembly with little or no testing, and the photodiode based meter the manufacturer or seller uses will overstate their output because of the IR. The IR leakage from these can be another problem. IR is invisible and potentially an eye hazard. You should have goggles rated for green laser use, make sure that they will stop the associated IR as well. Enjoy it as a bright green laser, be careful about IR (get IR filter and install on end of laser if you can DIY this). For powerful greens that are reliable, these are much more expensive, but some of the better ones are even US FDA compliant. Maybe browse "Reviews" forum of LPF for ideas. (nova, optotronics, laserglow, etc.)

Excellent, thanks for the reply billg519, and every one else.

This is MUCH more difficult with one of these little DPSS lasers than it is with a diode laser. Don't hurt it. Enjoy it for what it is. Save up. Buy a better one later. Or even better yet, build one of your own.

Peace,
dave
