Is this Ebay laser stronger than 1mw?

Hey guys, I bought a laser pointer for general entertainment, and since I'm not looking for anything strong, I decided to purchase one off of Ebay.

However, when I received it, I noticed that the beam is definitely stronger than the cheapo $5 ones I used to get. It says <1mw on the tag, but also has Class III on it. I checked Wikipedia, and there is no Class III on its own, and only IIIR, IIIa, IIIb.

Anyways, is there a chance that this beam is stronger than 1mw? If not, could it still damage my eyes anyway if I accidentally shine it in my eye, either directly or by reflection?

those ebay stuff are usually around 50mw which means 50x stronger than normal... get hit in the eye or reflection= eye damage...

Yes, as it its cheaper to make something that spits out power between 10-80mW then it is to make something that is 1mW, that being said it also makes that laser Illegal in Australia.

Yes that laser is over 1mW, it's just labeled 1mW to get past customs. A member here Alaskan I think bought a bunch of those from China real cheap and several members here got one. They are a cheap Chinese laser that will vary from one to the next. It's not eye safe, you can use it without safety glasses just be careful about mirrors, glass, etc.

Possibly, could be as much as 50mW or so. No way to tell without testing them, unless someone here already has tested those.

I bulk bought a bunch of the bmk laser pointers and they are all over 1mW, some of them even came labeled as 5mW and a few even had a 1mW sticker covering a 5mW sticker

I received the laser you linked to in your first post from Alaskan and it metered at just over 60mW although that doesn't mean that yours will. You could be higher or lower. Crap shoot what you get.

Hate too toot my own trumpet but is it a 1mW laser you are looking for or above 1mW?

If so what i believe you would want is a APC (Automatic Power Control) laser basically a laser which senses the light output and uses that to somewhat regulate the output rather than spinning a trim pot and hoping for light.

If you are looking for a 1mW pointer PM me and i can give you a few more details.
Keep in mind as i said above, 1mW lasers (532 mostly) are going to be more expensive than something above 5mW and below 100mW.

Good APC pointers are not only hard to find but expensive too.I have the usual e-bay pens.My 650nm is 100mw.My green starts at 15mw and then zooms to 80mw+...but it is very flakey and who knows how much IR.My strongest 405 pen is 83mw.

They were all 7 dollars each.I have seen green with IR filtering and APC that are below 5mw...I think they were 80 dollars or so.

The problem is that few buy them...the uninformed just get the ebay specials completely unaware how gonzo overspec and dangerous they are.

I find it ironic considering how much I shelled out in the very early days of DPSS greens to score a 10mw pointer.I still have it and it measures 9.85mw.
A 1000 dollar cni pointer!!!!

I think my 449 dollar 1.2watt 520nm from jetlasers is much better dollar/mw!!!!!

They only way to know is to measure them.....

Part of the horror is the wide variance between units.There is no way to tell what you have until you measure it!
