dx true 5

definitely would like to see some results.. probably gonna purchase about 5 sometime by this weekend just to play with..
(can't afford much more than that right now.. esp when i need to buy more stuff for my first laser build.. )

I finally got mine on Sat.! :yh: I have been testing and working on a detailed review, also had my hands full with trying to diagnose problems with the new DX modules, as well as things getting very busy with expanding my business.

Noticed something very strange about this unit, wanted to get your feedback on. Looking down inside the aperture cap at high magnification, the inside of the cap where it meets the module is THREADED, and the top of the module appears identical to the new DX greenie modules that they are now selling?!

This unit is not performing the same as the other True 5's reported here , and has some interesting quirks. I'm wondering if I got a new model based on the new DX module, so I'm anxious to crack it open and see exactly what's going on.

Hard to tell while still inside the unit, but as it likely has the threaded end on the module to match the threads on the cap, it does NOT appear to be either of the two modules in john_lawson's pics earlier in this thread, but more likely may look something like this -



Attempting to disassemble it per John's method, but it is not budging yet, and I am concerned that with those threads (rather than the smooth "slip-fit" design of the older modules in his pics), I may just be breaking it, and that it may require a different disassembly approach?

john_lawson, Bob_Boyce, or anybody else - have you encountered any True 5's that have threads on the inside of the aperture cap and/or end of the module, and if so, what method did you have to use to disassemble it without breaking it?

no if you want to and dont care about scratching up end cap take out the batts reconnect the tubes togather for better leverage the clampvise grips on the the silver end piece hold unit in your hand with button facing down that way it doesnt jam the board up and bend it back and forth while slowly pulling apart it should slowly but surely come apart after you do a few its easier and easier hope this helps

Were you been able to try that approach on a True 5 that had a module that was threaded on the end? It does not match either of the pics you included in your post #7 (which were both smooth-bore, press-fit designs).

And one of the other posters (jander6442, post #10) also indicated that if the module was threaded, that that approach wouldn't work? -

If they are threaded you have to go further than a wiggle (ex.) KD 30,50,100,150mW.

Have you come across one of the True 5's using the new threaded module yet, and can you confirm that this approach works on the threaded ones as well?

I am concerned that if I have something different than what you were getting before, I might destroy it trying to just yank it out!

ok and yea a part does thread into the end cap just remove the cap after its completely out of pen all i have taken apart are like that

they are different look at my pic on first page just slowly remove it like i said and all will be well
do not unscrew the cap never while its still in the pen it will break everything

Are these threaded modules the new 3-piece screw-part designs that DX is now selling? I have been spending a lot of time lately working with others trying to diagnose the problems with those, and I am suspicious that if they are the same modules DX is using in it's pens, then they may be selling the factory rejects to us as separate modules!

Anyways, thanks for the help! Testing on this showed that it currently is not even as powerful as my trusty eBay <10mw unit :cryyy:, and is putting out more IR , so I am hopeful I can do something to correct that situation once I get it cracked-open! :yh:

Just saw your latest post. Thank you for the offer - will let you know if I need assistance with! Will try to do this myself first - was not putting full effort into b4 for fear I would break it if doing it wrong.

okay so i ordered 3 of these off dx last monday and it just showed that its ready to ship today.
so people have successfully pot modded these?
if theres any more info someone can give me, that'll be great.

This topic is about 5mw lasers from DX, but i have always ordered 10mw version because my experience is that DX shipp's them quicker than 5mw.. It seem's to me 10mw unit's are much more available and also when you buy 3pieces and use bulkrate it is nearly the same price as for the 5mw.. My exeprience with those 10mw units is the same as your's with 5mw.. they are perfectly pot modable..
i have always opened them up, turn the pot around 80degrees anti-clockvise and i always get great results..
i suppose that all DX units from 5 to 50mw are the same..

but

focalprice offers visually same units for nearly the same price.. i would better order from them as i have a great experience with their dispatching. Usualy it doesnt take more than 2 days and within 2 weeks i have my stuff recieved.. this is impossible with DX..

have anyone from you guys tried, ordered, or even succesfuly pot-moded those lasers from focalprice as well?
just want to know if those units are the same, with same big resistor and so on...

i have 3 units on a way to me, which will arrive at 10th sept., but i cant wait to know what i should expect..

I have 3 of the DX "T5s" on the way (shipped 2 days ago) as well as a laserbee, so I hope to be able to post some readings in the next week or two. Also got a "T50" for comparison.

Nothing from Focalprice here to test, but if anyone would like to send me one I'll be more than happy to test it once the laserbee gets here.

some of us don't have the liberty of ordering anything above 5mW anymore from DX... so.. yea..

well.. mine supposedly left the US customs post office in New York yesterday, as far as any updates or anything for today... i haven't seen anything.

why it flew past California all the way to New York? hmm.. i can only hope that everything will be ok.

I've noticed that with a lot of my orders from HK. Not just DX, but other companies too.
My order of DX true 5s arrived in NY a couple days ago too

mine might've actually been delivered today, though i'm not home right now.. and won't be until next tuesday.. (ugh)

siblings said a package came in from HK.. so.. i assume that's it. won't know until i get back.. *sigh*.. oh well. 4 more days to know.. bleh.
