Hi guys this is a little strange I know but here goes.
My sister is 5 years old, she already has a 5mW red laser and is very safe with it (we always supervise and she knows the danger so please no flaming).

her birthday is coming up and I want to make for her a waterproof green laser from a DX module (http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.10094) as they are ~5mW and have IR filters.

What I want to know is if there is a way to decrease the power (to around 2-3mW) on the modules so she cant hurt herself as this will be a clicky on as opposed to a push on so the danger is slightly higher?

I think there is a pot, but I'm not sure if there is is it just a case of turning the pot up?

also at that reduced power will any beam be visible at night?

cheers for any good responses or suggestions- you'll be making a little girl very happy :)

Pot is short for potentiometer, as in measure of power, so in order to turn the power down, you would turn the pot down. There might be a very very faint beam at 2-3mW, but not all that likely. At night you'll definitely have more luck, but it'll probably be pretty faint. Also, I would thoroughly thoroughly inspect it for IR leakage, even if it has a filter it can still leak some IR due to the prevelance of low-quality filters.

Take out the batteries - Then it'll be ULTRA safe. :D

Just a note - DPSS lasers are quite fragile, it may not withstand the day to day crashings of a 5 year old.

Re: DX 5mW green lasr modues- make them child safe

Thanks Amnizu.

as long as theres a faint beam I'm sure shell be very happy :)

Dont I want to increase the resistance of the pot- and before I go buying it do we know it even has one

I was going to check for IR leakage but I don't have a green filter I assume if I take some 3d glasses red lenses it will let the IR through and not the green so I can check for leakage? I have some IR filters coming thanks to the generosity of people on the forum so i could always add one just to be sure...

At 2-3mW its eye safe for flashes right?

and happytomato yeah your right no batteries coudl work :p

Im installing it into a rubber lined torch so hopefully *fingers crossed* it will withstand the punishment... and shell be six soon :p

2-3mW is perfectly safe as long as she doesn't stare into it for extended periods.
Also, you will need to make sure the crystals are properly glued in, as if you are using a cheapo laser pointer encasing the laser in rubber won't help.

maybe if you open it you could solder a reed switch between the battery connection&pcb(after destroying the original connection)
then you could only turn it on with a magnet next to the tube

cheers guys will glue it hard in place with epoxy...

I dont want to add reed relays as i don't really see the point :-/
