I just bought this and was wondering how dangerous is this, because i have a little brother, and he's....lets say curious at times, and I don't want him to be playing around with something dangerous. Also, If i'm just using this to play around and point at things, will i need goggles?
Thanks.

PS: How does it look? Do you think it'll be good, or crappy? I've seen some people say lasers from DealExtreme aren't very good. Do you think this one is trustworthy?

Welcome to the forums SilverSilver.

The laser that you have chosen is a pretty standard 532nm pointer. It's a little more powerful than your standard 5mW pointer.

That being said........It's only wise to protect your vision with laser goggles. A quick blast from 30mW might not do any damage, but really.....what if it does?.......
None of the lasers you purchase or make will ever be worth your vision!

As for your little brother.....of course hide it from him, but even better take the batteries out and put them somewhere else....if anything at least it will slow him down:beer:

Ahh, thanks. I'll be sure to keep it safe while I'm away. (btw, SilverSLIver. Everyone gets it wrong on all the forums I've been on :c)

But what do you think about the quality? And if it hits something reflective and shines me in the eye, will it damage my eyes?

Thank you lazy laser!

But my main question is, if a 30mW hits me in the eye, will my blink reflex be fast enough?
and how good does it seem? My dad said it looked "cheap". Will it be underspec-d?

Any laser from DX will probably be under Spec. As it is so cheap I wouldn't be expecting anything over 23mw.

No. 5mW is the limit.

DX is not known for "quality" lasers. They are know for cheap lasers.
That does not mean that you won't be satisfied, however.
I order things from DX regularly.
As a "rule of thumb" anything rated over 50mW from a cheap China shop like DX, Kaidomain, etc. is going to be a dud.

Oh yeah... are you located in the USA? DX is prohibited from shipping Class IIIb lasers (>5mW) to the USA.
I personally like their "true 5mW" pens. They are cheap and usually come out around 5-15mW and some as high as 40mW of green (not counting IR).
I mostly take them apart and use the pieces for other projects but they are nice to modify or give away as gifts, too.
The build quality is shabby in comparison to the more expensive stuff, but it's not good practice to expect much when you pay little. ;)

Ah, thanks for the info :D
(i'm in Canada, btw.)

My sister is paranoid about it. She keeps saying that if i shine it at a wall for long enough, it'll burn. I kept saying it's not possible, but she's determined that it will. This isn't true, is it?

Also, how long would this take to ship? It says 7-10 during the new years season, but it's already been 11...

Thanks for the info, i really appreciate it.

A 30mw green laser wouldn't burn a wall, unless you have a black wall it won't burn. The DX laser may be underspec so it will probably not burn at all. >50 me if you want to burn.

Aha, thanks. I can now prove to her that it cannot. Will it be strong enough to burst a balloon? (with and without sharpie marks)

How well a laser burns is dependent on the material type, surface color (absorption), and power density.

In layman's terms, if you use a balloon that absorbs the laser light and focus the beam well enough, 5mW can pop it.

If you held it there long enough, maybe. But if you want some balloon popping action
I'd go 50mW+ .

Nice DP itsmei ;)

Hey SilverSliver,

I am in Ottawa and ordered the True 30 mW Green Laser from DX on Feb 15, 2011 and it just arrived yesterday on March 30th so you may have to wait a while, but I can say it was worth it! Already burnt through the crappy batteries that came with it. :p

Have a fun time!

Kryzt
