DPSS stands for diode-pumped solid state (laser). This method is used to produce laser colors outside of red and blue, AKA yellow, green, etc. Blue and red laser diodes exist as a direct electric to light output, while a DPSS laser uses a diode to pump light through a crystal to get the final light desired, ie for green lasers, an IR 808nm diode is pumped through a KTP crystal to produce 1064nm then 532nm green.

That is also the reason that dpss lasers are much more expensive than regular ones, the manufacture cost is much higher do to the more complex design and that the filters used are extremely hard to make and expensive.

The focus depends on the lens and laser host, not if its dpss or not. As for safety goggles what you say isn't true. Dpss lasers are just as pure as regular lasers, the filters they have have to be perfect to obtain the desired output frequency. Now on the other hand the problem might be some don't have a IR filter on them so you have IR radiation comming out of the laser ( mostly happens with green lasers). Now if your goggles don't have a iR protection than you might be in danger.
