Unhappy Does this look normal?

Hi, I recently bought a HL520 50mw from Laserbtb and I was wondering if the way the dot looks is normal, because I have a 532nm LP and it looks fine, just the dot and nothing else.

Example:

If it's not normal, what should I do?

Your pictures are huge, please resize them.

That looks like something on the lens, either dirt or glue or some other debris. But no, you shouldn't be getting splash like that right out of the box IMO.

AND BEFORE you go and trying cleaning the lens do a bit of research on cleaning optics! It will save you so much freakin' time, money, and frustration in the long run.

I think they look smaller now, i hope its ok. I thought so too, but I was surprised to see this out of the box, even worse I bought two other lasers aswell handheld, the 635nm and 450nm and both of those have the same issue.

Yes, I will look for that, thanks. I hate the fact that the cap cannot be pulled off, since the hole is not that big

You should take a look at the diode output without a lens, and/or try a new lens and see if that gives you more info.

Yes, the debris isn't necessarily on the final collimating lens, it could be on the diode's output window, or inside the lens barrel.

Obviously, never look into the laser with batteries/power in place.

Oh, well, I tried cleaning it off but nothing happens so I'm practically sure that if its dirty, it's on the inside. I feel bad for buying three expensive lasers and come with this as a result

There is no way I can access the inside of this laser to clean it, right?

I'm fairly sure that this is from the lens barrel. This always happens with 3-element lenses or other lenses that clip the laser's output.

It could be ... although in my experience that's usually more of a ring or halo sort of splash, rather than a splatter.

I'd contact LaserBTB to see what they can do for you. I don't have experience with their lasers so I can't comment on what it's supposed to look like from them - IMO that's a lot of splash for a new laser.

Since the Laserbtb HL520 is a focusable model, you can rotate the focus knob and see if the splash rotates with it, or stays stationary.
If the splash rotates, it is on the focus lens and not the diode window.

Yes, I wondered about that and since all three lasers I bought are focusable I realized that the splash stays stationary on all three so pretty sure the focus itself its clean

Sta is 100% correct, it is because the lens (or aperture) is cutting off the laser's output. It's an artifact of the laser light hitting the edge of the lens / hitting the inside of the lens barrel or aperture (varying case by case).

A few years ago, I owned a HL that did this. If you look at the aperture (from the side, not straight into it) I bet you that you can almost definitely see laser light hitting the aperture.

___

Potential solution is to make the aperture hole wider or closer to the lens. If it's seriously a problem, try expanding the hole. I doubt you could send it back and receive one without that artifact in return. It's common on these mass-produced lasers, especially ones with an extra aperture after the focusing lens.

__

If it's the lens, maaaybe you can get it fixed by them, though that's fine tuned QC at that point.

Seems normal. That's from reflections of the beam hitting the lens barrel and or focus cap. I doesn't rotate when you focus the lens? It stays stationary while you turn the focus knob?

I mean you can see the pattern "move" but the splash on both sides stays stationary, pretty sure is not dirt.

I sent a message to laserbtb and they said is not dirty, just the way laser diodes behave.
I made a ghetto mod with a school glue cap and worked perfectly on removing that, so i'm quite satisfied. I have three now, 520nm, 635nm and 445nm handheld models. I'm obsessive so this things drive me crazy but i'm getting used to it. Anyways, already ordered a sanwu guardian 1w 445nm with the beam expander, probably the best laser I'll ever own.

Thanks everyone for your answers!

Looks like the laser light was just grazing some edge there, wonder how you fixed that
