Difference between 50mW and 150mW

How is the difference in brightness between a 50mW and a 100mW and a 150mW? I've heard people say that there are not much difference, and I'm not using it for burning, so I'm wondering if a 150mW is really worth the cash over my current $25 50mW.

If the the two lasers have the same beam diameter then it will be a slight increase in visibility. If the 150mW has a greater beam diameter then it will be considerably brighter then your 50mW. The 150mW will be brighter in well lit rooms etc. If you are looking for a little more day visibility then go for the 150mW.

I dont think any of the pen style pointers have a very long duty cycle because of their lack of heatsinking. That page doesn't specify the beam diameter although. Increasing your power will increase the beam visibility without a doubt. If you want something great for night pointing try finding a 75-125mW. That should be more than enough for your application.

If you want the best visibility then go with the 150mW.
The thing is that members of this forum have come to conclude that for double the brightness you need four times the power (on 532nm).

I'd recommend getting an 80-100mW module from O-Like. They're reported to be over spec. (120mW could be great for beam visibility).

Here is a photo of a 150mW and a 45mW green laser. The 150mW is on the left....notice the reflection of the beams between the two

I also got the 50mW laser from Ledshoppe and bought then the 120mw+ module from O-like. Since the div. of the olike modile is very good i was really dissapointed ... The 120mw modules´ beam is much brighter and better visible but the thin beam just isnt so impressive like the fatter beam of the ledshoppe unit ):

If a wider beam is what you want.. Look for a pointer with an adjustable focus. With an adjustable focus you could make the divergence larger thus making the beam appear thicker at a distance. You could attempt to refocus your o-like module although I would strongly suggest otherwise. I personally love the needle thin beam on my Viper 75mW from DL.. but I also have an addiction for burning lasers .

I ordered that 150 a couple days ago. I do not have a power tester but I will try the typical stuff like baloon popping at a range and match lighting, make a video and throw it up on youtube. I assume the thing will take at least one week to get here though.

Do you have a weaker greenie to compare the brightness and divergence to?

No I am a "laser virgin". I did however order a focusable 200mw red from budgetgadgets.com. So those are the two I expect to receive within the next week or so.

A true 150mw should pretty easily light a black match or pop a dark baloon right? without too much delay?

Todd's picture says it all.
Look at the reflection of the beams and you will see a nice comparative of the apparent brightness.

Our eyes does not detect light linearly....in fact it's more log-normal....... so what was said above is more or less true in that 2x the light output would result in 50% more apparent brightness (keeping all other factors the same).

I got the green laser in. It seems pretty damn strong, can see the beam even in the light of day, at night obviously it looks really hot. It would not light a red match that I sharpied black, however it was melting through a black garbage bag with relative ease. I wonder if it can be focused stronger somehow. As it is my first laser, I do not have much of a reference to go on here.
