You could focus it to a smaller point with a magnifying glass...

BTW... I hope you are using Laser Safety Googles....

Is it very harmful to point the laser away from you and look at the point without goggles? Obviously shining the thing into my eye is a recipe for blindness.

I was at the Virginia Beach Hamfest today and a couple of vendors had some green and blue lasers. I purchased a 150mW and a 50mW laser. When I got it home, the 50mW laser was much brighter than the supposed 150mW. This concerned be because I paid a lot more for the 150mW! So I tried one test by placing an 8X magnifying glass about 6 inches from the laser while pointed at the ground. I did notice that the 50mW laser had a larger diameter spot than the 150mW laser through the magnifying glass. Why is it the 150mW laser is not as bright? Did I get a defective laser?

It's probably just usual chinese QC. Last hamfest I went to, I took my LPM. :D One guy selling 5mw pens was amazed everything he had was overspec heh. Another guy advertising 'high power' pointers... with no safety features I might add.. heh.. knew his stuff was crap because he refused to let me test any of his unless I bought whatever I wanted to test first.
