Can't really tell in the pic because it's my phone camera but the dot is messed up and there is like a galaxy effect of smaller dots this is unfocused. When focused on infinity there is a circle around the dot. I think the crystal may be messed up. This laser LZGN - 532nm 200mW Focusable Green Laser Pointer. I ordered it on 11-26-11. I got it 12-6-11 (Very fast shipping :D). I did not see a warranty but I have heard the warranty is 6 months. What should I do ? thanks :D

Does it appear to have significantly lost output power? From my experience once you even slightly misalign a DPSS component, the output power drops dramatically. I've never been able to realign a crystal from the perfect state to a less perfect state where the output did not drop at least 60%.

In other words, I would expect it to be at least less than half as bright if the crystal did indeed go out of alignment.

Have you tried cleaning the lens at all? Lots of smaller spots with a galaxy effect sounds like a dirty lens somewhere, or moisture/condensation.

First I would send the picture to the people you bought the laser from and ask them to replace it, they may just send you a new laser

You may need to get a better camera and take a close up of how the dot actually looks and this picture here or a better one like it.

It doesn't seem to have lost much power and what do I clean the lense with ? It looks like this btw
p.s. this pic is not mine I found it it's the same laser Also I live on the east coast of the US so from all of us HAPPY NEW YEAR

Well, don't take it apart like that for one, haha. Not yet anyway. Take a microfiber cloth (they are sold as eyeglass cleaning cloths) and gently rub the lens clean with a non-sharp object supporting the microfiber cloth. For example, one might take a q-tip and place the cloth around it, and then gently wipe the lens clean. I advise against paper products as they tend to scratch and also absorb oil from your skin and transfer it to the lens.

Clean high quality silk is good too.

No the top screws off easily there is no taking apart involved and it is that this is dirty not the lense.

Well generally one always starts from the outside and works in; clean the outer lens first, then if still not helping, the next one in, etc etc.

Since we don't know which lens is dirty....

Yeah, clean 'em *all* then. Just make sure you use a clean soft lint-free cloth.

*do NOT touch the diode window.

what does the diode window look like ? And I know it's the inner lense it does it with the outer lense off. Also I tried cleaning it with the same cloth you use for glasses and I think it just got worse :/ It was clean btw

Since it is a DPSS unit the diode is actually an IR diode at the back end of the DPSS crystal train, so you're not likely going to see it. I was just giving general advice with the special bit about the diode window, but for your specific case, don't remove anything past what it looks like in the photo you posted. I don't know the host well but I'd guess what is visible there is the intact dpss assembly in heatsink. You never want to dissasseble a dpss assembly for any reason what so ever.

FlaminPyro's advice is probably best. Let the seller fix the problem. If this is not an option, then I reckon try cleaning it.

So, the outermost lens of your laser is probably mounted in the part that has been removed in this picture. It is the concentrating lens that refocuses the expanded beam from the expanding lens. Think of this as part of a tiny beam expander that green laser modules have built in. Clean that one first and see if there is any change.

Next, that little lens glued to the top of the module in this picture. This is the expanding lens, the other part of the miniaturized beam expander. Carefully clean that lens without pushing on it. It may become dislodged since it is only glued in place.

If that doesn't fix it, then I say you should live with it.

My guess is that it's dirt, hybrid laser crystals don't ge misaligned, and if they misalign with respect to the pump diode it may modehop or lose power, but a messy beamprofile is most likely dirt somewhere.
If the laser didn't have this weird beamprofile when you got it it's probably dirt and not the sellers fault.

How would I go about cleaning dirt ? And I think it may just be smoke particles from lighting matches (dumb idea if it is close to the laser I guess)

Try cleaning the outer optical surface, this can be the last lens, the IR filter or a window depending how your laser is build. After you've cleaned that surface and the beam doesn't look cleaner move to the next surface (backside of the last element) and so on until you reach the crystal set, it's probably best not to touch that one.

I clean with isopropanol and lens paper. Don't clean with a fuild that leaves a residue on the optics. A q-tip also may be handy, I haven't used those myself. Removing a lens can make cleaning easier and if the beam suddely is much better you've found the problem.

THANKS :D :D :D some isopropanol (rubbing alchohal) and a q-tip worked like a charm my laser is FIXED now lets hope someone will buy it :D
