CNI 532nm IR Leakage

Hello All,

Newbie here. Sorry for posting so quickly. I did search this forum (and others), and haven't found an answer to my question. A little background first. I built a he/ne laser in high school back in the late 70s (yes I am old), so I've been around them for a long time. Owned several low power red laser pointers. Just bought a CNI 532nm 50mw laser. I need to purchase some 532 blocking googles/glasses. From what I have read, CNI makes a good laser. What I want to know is does anyone know if there is much IR output along with the 532? My concern is that if I buy 532 blocking glasses and the laser also leaks IR, that the IR won't be block by the glasses and a reflection could harm my eye(s). Is there a simple way to check for IR output, such as using some material to block the 532 but will let any IR through? I do have a vid cam with "night shot" so it can "see" IR. I also have a night vision scope that can see IR. Can I use the piece of plastic covering from a tv remote that goes over the IR diodes? Or is there some other way to do this? I am worrying about nothing?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Magellan,

As far as I know, CNI's 532s are filtered. You shouldn't have much IR output on a CNI 50mW 532. ~2-3mW at most.

You wouldn't want to use the plastic covering from a TV remote as that is IR *transparent* and would be 532 *opaque*, exactly the opposite of what you need. Phoenix77 here sells IR filters, but you're probably overworrying - especially on a CNI laser, and especially on a 50mW 532.

If you had received it from Focalprice, it'd be another story.

Here's the thing: What style of CNI 50mW is it? Do you have pictures? We can probably determine for sure if it has an IR filter (It probably does.) by looking at it, especially if it's the pen type and the front aperture unscrews.

I bought it from "amazing1.com" for $127. Hopefully for that price it's a quality unit. The model # is the same as CNI's model #. It's a PGLIIIA532-50. Having a bit of trouble here at work uploading a pic of it. Will attempt later. I went to the CNI website and found the spec sheet for this model. It has nothing on it about IR output. My thinking with the IR cover from a remote, is that it WOULD block the 532 light and any IR would shine through and then I could look at any output using my vidcam nightshot or night vision googles. If any IR passed through, those should be able to see it.

If it's a genuine CNI laser, it should have a filer. That PGLIIIA is the same CNI laser being sold at laserglow and novalasers. It has the 5 safety features I believe. But yeah you can check for IR by filtering 532nm and then taking a camera and getting a photo (wouldn't use flash...) It would usually show up in a violet/purple color.

There is IR filter inside the portable laser. The residual IR is surely <1mW.

I forgot to mention for sure <1mW for this 50mW green portable laser.
For the high power portable laser, maybe there is some difference.

Even though we have established that the laser is IR filtered... for anyone interested, one method to determine if there is IR leakage or test if the device has an IR filter, is to grab a camera that can see IR light (test with a TV remote) then place the laser about 10m or so away from a wall and grab the camera and try to see if you can see a ring of IR light around the green dot.... Since the IR light diverges much more then the green light does, you should see a round IR ring around the small green dot.

Even better way to 'see' IR is to dismantle some cheap webcam. IR filter is usually piece of glass lightly glued to the lens. Easy to remove. It has two benefits:
1) With such camera you can see IR even better.
2) you can use the filter to see how much difference it makes on the beam.
